Any expereince with C. difficile

ISO some info as we suspect DD the toddler has it. Just wondering what happened, I searched and now am scared so looking for real life experience and not Mayo Clinic horror.

Re: Any expereince with C. difficile

  • I don't know much but it is stinky and resistant to most antibiotics.  That's why people get it when they are on antibiotics.

Why do you think your toddler has it?

  • I know someone who had it after a craaaaazy birth experience.  It was pretty scary, I won't lie :-(  But she's fine now.
  • I am so sorry, I dont have any experience but I remember hearing a radio program about a treatment option. The link is below scroll down to the Current: Part 2.

  • I used to sell a probiotic that was used to treat C.diff in certain cases.  We called on a lot of infectious disease doctors, so if you haven't taken your DD to one of those, that would be my suggestion since they are highly trained.  The product that I know of is Florastor (S. boulardii).  I'd mention it to your doctor.  It used to be sampled, but I don't know if it is anymore.  The website is www.florastor.com.  Best of luck!

  • Yes, I had it 4 years ago after an appendectomy and less than 24-hour hospital stay. Also my husband got it this summer right after we brought our preemie daughter home.

In my case, I had diarrhea that wouldn't stop. I had lab tests that confirmed it was C. diff. I took Flagyl and it cleared up.

In my husband's case, he had unexplained testicular pain for a few weeks. He went to his PCP who couldn't find anything, then to a urologist, thinking it was a testicle problem. The urologist couldn't find anything on exam or labs. Finally, that weekend the pain was so bad that we went to the ER and he had a CT scan. The CT scan revealed inflammation in the tissues--the bacteria release toxins that irritate the tissue--and the ER doc made the diagnosis, later confirmed with lab tests.

My husband's first round of meds was also Flagyl. It worked but didn't "take" and the symptoms came back. He ended up on 10 days of Vancomycin, which is an extremely potent antibiotic that is also about $2000 for a typical treatment. That cured it.

By the way, he probably got it after the Augmentin he took for a sinus infection killed all the good bacteria in his gut and allowed the C. diff bacteria to overgrow.

I truly hope your baby is OK. This is not a fun infection. And I would also suggest you get some bleach-based cleaner and clean up after her every day, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer and follow excellent hygiene practices so no one else in your house gets sick.
