Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Stage 2 food question

I've just started giving DD solid foods and things are going great.  I've been introducing each new food with 3-4 days in between as suggested and so far no problems.  I took a look at a stage 2 food from Earth's Best at the store today and read the ingredients.  In addition to pears, oats, and apples (all of which she has had) it also has dates, raisins, milk, wheat... Wow, a lot of ingredients.  It says 6+ months, so I'm wondering, does the need to introduce foods singly diminish the more food they have tried without trouble, or would you introduce each of these ingredients individually first before buying a stage 2 food like this (it was called Wholesome Breakfast, or something like that, just FYI).  What has your experience been?

Re: Stage 2 food question

  • I can't give you the correct medical answer, but I personally have introduced more than one new food at a time for the exact same reason - trying out the Earth's Best baby food. We've tried the dinners which have stuff like zuccini, garbanzo beans and lentils. My son was 7 months plus and did fine with them, but we did add some water because they were very thick.

  • My understanding was that Stage 2 simply meant more food (4 oz versus 2.5 oz).  However, pediatrician advised against jarred foods that said things like "breakfast, dessert, dinner" because they have additives like you mentioned.  We stick to just the fruits and veggies in jars...
  • I treat stage 2 foods just the same as stage ones. I try to introduce only one new ingredient at a time just in case there is a reaction so that I know what it is from.
  • A few of the Stage 2 foods that I've given DD aren't available in Stage 1, so it wasn't possible to introduce those ingredients individually.  DD didn't have any reaction to any of the Stage 1 foods or cereals so I was a little less cautious with the Stage 2 foods I gave her, I still only introduced 1 new thing a day but I didn't wait 3-4 days inbetween new foods...just not a lot of new things in one day.  HTH.  Not sure if that was too clear...I have a headache at the moment so I'm not thinking too clearly!!
  • They tend to blend more foods in Stage 2, but I'm still only giving one new ingredient at a time. ?For example, we have some apple with apricots, but since he's had apples, the only new food is apricots. ?He's also digging the peach oatmeal banana, but he's had oatmeal and banana, so peach is new. ?I'm staying away from the ones with too many ingredients.
