Babies: 9 - 12 Months

First big fall ... off the changing table

Hopefully some of you have had this happen and can reassure me... I stepped away for a second (of course!) to grab a sock and my 8-month old took a header off the changing table, landing right on her head!  She cried for a few minutes, but since then seems fine and back to her smiley self.  The doctor said to keep an eye on her, make sure she isn't throwing up, pupils are dialated, etc.

Anyway - I'm sure she'll be fine, but I'm still a wreck, of course!  Just a reminder that they're quick little suckers and you gotta keep an eye on them at all times!

Re: First big fall ... off the changing table

  • we haven't had a fall like that yet but came close several times already!

just make sure to watch her like the doc said and look for signs of a concussion.  it happens! don't feel bad.  it won't be her last fall, that's for sure.

  • Scary, huh? It happens!
Happened to DH once when he was changing Quentin. He caught him as he was falling thankfully, but he was about 4 inches from hitting the ground when he did. :::Whew::::
Glad your little one is okay!?

  • That stinks!  I'm sure that she'll be fine though.

DS started really struggling during diaper changes when he hit 7 months old.  We now just change him on the floor.  There's no way that we'd be able to change him up high anymore--diaper changes have become WWE championship competitions!

  • Oliver fell off at about 5 months, when DH was changing him. I think it freaked DH out more than DS after the initial screaming. Same as yours, we watched for signs of concussion. He was fine.
  • It Happens!!  Almost everyone you talk to will have thier story for the first big incident. Ours was a "bed incident."  One of my DS's rolled off the bed and got stuck between the mattress and the iron footboard.  He was fine, after a few minutes of crying.  It did remind us how quickly things can happen, and that we can't look away even for a second!  As soon as I had told my sister in law, she told me my niece fell off the changing table too when she was about 6 months old.

  • This just happened to us last week. DS fell from the bed onto TILE floor in a hotel room. He screamed for 3 hours straight (heartbreaking) and has a red mark on the side of his head, but hasnt shown any signs of head trauma. Im sure he's fine! I know how scary it can be :(.

  • It does happen to the best of us. JD dove right off the couch the other day. I was standing right there and still didn't have time to catch him! No more sitting on the couch for him! I think it hurts mommy more than baby!

  • DS rolled off the changing table/dresser the other day while I was putting his diaper into the genie- I caught him, but it was too close to comfort.  I've since moved the changing pad to the floor.  I feel more comfortable that way, because it really does just take a second.

  • Yes, I think it happens to everyone at some point, unfortunately. My guy fell off the bed when I was standing RIGHT there, just turned for a second to grab something. But he was fine, and we're much more careful now. Don't beat yourself up, it happens.
  • I think that is why any pediatrician, child rearing book, friend or family member with any common sense would tell you to NEVER walk away even for a second if your baby (especially once mobile) is up high or near water. Sorry. I know you feel like crap and "accidents happen". But some "accidents" can be prevented with just a little forethought. JMO.
  • It's scary but it happens.  My DS fell of our bed a couple months ago.  I turned around for a second to grab a sweater and he rolled right off the end of the bed onto the floor.  It scared the crap out of both of us but he was fine.  After a few minutes of crying he was back to playing with his toys.  I felt like such a bad mommy.  I'm definitely more careful now.

  • Not the changing table....but my oldest fell off the exam table at the doctor's office and hit the tile floor, naked, with a horrible SPLAT.

She was 6mo at the time.  She was fine, but I was glad it happened there, I guess!

My youngest.....she had a fall, but it was DH's fault.  The goon put her bouncy chair on the table and she sat up and twisted and her and chair flew off the table.  We took her to the ER because the pedi said to (she threw up after, had a bump on her head, and, generally, just didn't look good).  She had a CT Scan and she was fine.

They're pretty resiliant and, as the pedi told me when it happened to my oldest, it's the first of many falls, bumps, bruises, and, potentially, broken bones.

  • My 21# little man just became too much to lift onto the table. I change him on the floor now.
  • it happened to me yesterday!  i was doing the same thing you were doing i needed to get a pair of socks and i always made sure!!  i felt horrible she went feet first and down.  :(  i was horrified!!!  thank god she is ok i know that i will never do that again even if it is just for a second.  it happened so fast!  i felt like the worst mother in the world!  but i thank god that she is ok!!  it is a lesson that i learned!
