round vs. convertible crib

Ok... My mom and I were discussing cribs. She told me "to be practical" and that a round crib, although cute, is not practical. I have talked to others that think if you plan on having more than 1 child, that convertible cribs would just require you to buy another crib for the 2nd one... What are your thoughts on this?

I love the idea of a round crib in the center of the room, but I don't want to get something that I will regret either... TIA!

Re: round vs. convertible crib

  • I bought a convertible crib and plan to use the same one for both our kids.  When baby #2 arrives, we'll buy baby #1 his toddler/teen bedroom set.  I love the way a round crib looks, but I would think it would be impractical because it would be that much harder/expensive to buy bedding.  But if you love it, go for it!  I had my heart set on one particular crib and my husband talked me out of it because it was more money.  Every day I wish we had bought the crib I loved!

  • Unless you're having one kid I don't see a convertable crib more practical than a regular (rectangle) crib.  When baby 2 arrives they will get the same crib and baby 1 will get a toddler set.  I do however agree that a round crib is not practical in that the sheets may be more expensive but as long at you do the research and compare bedding prices then I say get the one you love.

I think round cribs are adorable but think of the bedding choices you are limiting yourself to.  That is how I talked myself out of one.

If you check out ebay, they have tons of round crib bedding sets, thats where we bought ours and it was a 9 piece set, well made and adorable. FWIW:)

  • DS had a convertible crib.  I will never buy a convertible crib again.  Just last weekend we converted his crib into a full size bed.  It is entirely too high for a toddler or any child, IMO.  DH and I have a very high bed...but we're adults.  DS's bed is as high as our king.  So, we had to take the box spring off and make do with just the mattress....which is probably going to ruin the mattress and completely messes up the beadspred that he now has.  Can't use a dust ruffle either so underneath the bed shows.  We are buying this baby a new crib (non convertible).  I think I would have rather just bought DS a new furniture set and handed down his nursery furniture to the next baby...but it's pretty masculine looking and wouldn't work for a girl.  JMO, don't go convertible.

  • I agree with the previous quotes.  The round cribs look adorable, but they aren't 'practicle' and bedding is more expensive.  I have a convertible crib for my son, he is now 2.  We have taken the front part of it off so it's like a day bed right now.  When baby number 2 comes (not pregnant yet- but slowly thinking about it) we will probably buy my son a twin bed and our new baby will use the crib.

On the other hand, if you have your heart set on the round crib then go for it!  You say you don't want to get a round crib only to regret it later, but if you really have your heart set on the round crib and get a convertible crib for practical reasons you might regret that choice too.  Good luck with everything. :)

  • I am going with the round crib. I am having a friends mom make the bedding for me. There is a lot of good ideas/styles online for making your own. Plus it's a lot cheaper to do, then what most sets cost for any crib. GL.

  • Round crib = a crap load of money for a piece of furniture used for less than 3 years.

Add to that the INSANE cost of the bedding required and it's an obviously impractical choice IMO.

If you're loaded and love to throw away money - go for it!

And FWIW - I hate convertible cribs too.  "toddler beds" (what they turn into when they convert) are 100% unnecessary.

It's just one more new fangled thing they use to stick it to new parents who are all excited and tossing around cash....

A regular crib does just fine.

When baby is ready for a bed - just get a regular bed!

If you're concerned about the height and don't feel that side safety rails are enough protection.....  leave out the box springs and frame and just put the matress on the floor until the tot gets the hang of it.

From my experience though they do just fine going straight to a regular bed from the crib.
