Babies: 0 - 3 Months

third tri question - bottles

You ladies are so helpful!  I plan on breastfeeding but also pumping so DH can feed baby from time to time.  Do you recommend buying a full set of one brand of bottles (like Dr. Browns gift set) or buying a few individual bottles in different brands to figure out which one is best for baby?  Also how many should I have on hand when the baby arrives?

 Thanks again!

Re: third tri question - bottles

  • I would buy a few now, but not too many. We started with Dr. Browns but have a TON more of different brands now. Just wait to see how the baby likes them.

  • Buy a few different brands.  I BF and am back at work.  I only have 6 full size bottles and 4 small ones.
  • We bought three different kinds (one of each), she normally bf's but will take two of those three bottles (avent tempos and evenflo glass bottles). The ones she doesn't like is the playtex drop ins, but every baby is different
  • I got some from my cousin.  we ended up using the Playtex drop ins he likes the wide nipple
  • Good question.  You'll notice they have many different types of nipples--I would recommend the wider type nipples---Dr Brown's have them in the wide neck bottles, Playtex drop-ins have them, etc.  Those are best for breastfed babies and help with nipple confusion.  I started with wide neck dr browns but b/c of the BPA issue and the fact I couldn't find wide neck in the larger size we switched to the playtex drop-ins.

I would just get a couple 4oz bottles for now of a couple different brands.  Once you see which you and baby like, you can get more.

  • Buy one of several types, dd went through 5 until she settled on playtex drop ins. I have 6 playtex bottles, and that is plenty (I send 3 to babysitter for her).

  • I got the Playtex Drop-ins gift set and that has been good and enough for me.  I BF for the first month and now FF.
  • We got only Avent and love them. She goes from breast to bottle with no problem. Whatever bottles you choose, I would suggest getting the ones with wide nipples (avent, playtext, born free). We used the little medela bottles with the narrow nipple, and she had some trouble with those.

I'm not sure how many to have on hand. I would try to really establish breastfeeding before you start giving your LO bottles if you can. Maybe wait until he/she is 6 weeks?

  • We registered for, and got the Dr. Browns and the Born Free BPA free gift sets.  It took DD about a week to take the bottle (I breast feed, but we do one bottle a day, to help transition for when I go back to work.)  She will only take the Dr. Browns bottles so far.  So, right now, the Born Frees are looking like a big waste.  Maybe she'll take them later, but right now we're just happy to have her taking anything.

  • If you're not going to bottle feed often, I would just buy a few to start off with.  We use the AVENT bottles and neither of my sons have had a problem going back and forth between breast and bottle.
