My son is 3 weeks old today. I started breastfeeding from day one and everything was going great. Then around day 7 I started having pain when nursing so I headed to the lactation consultant. He was latching on correctly but he was holding his tongue in the back of his mouth instead of placing it out over his bottowm lip when sucking. She showed us how to "train" his tongue to come forward and he corrected the problem within a day!! Nursing went great for a couple days and then the pain came back....horrible pain. Everytime I would nurse my nipples would have a cut looking place where the nipple meets the aereola. So, I started pumping in hopes that my nipples would heal up and I could start nursing again. Well, pumping has been going fine but no matter what type of bottle I use he gets so gassy and nothing helps. The only thing that helps him is to nurse so he doesn't get in any air. However, everytime I nurse the nipple pain comes back. The lactation people keep telling me hes perfect on my breast and I don't know what to do. His tongue is also right when he uses a bottle. I want to breastfeed him so he isn't gassy and up all day and night, not to mention the bonding time that I love when he nurses. Please help! Any recommendations are GREATLY appreciated!! I also posted this on the breastfeeding and 0-6 month board but I thought you guys may be able to help as well.
Re: I need breastfeeding help, bad!!
are you using the cream stuff after every single breast feeding?? that stuff helped my tremendously.
I don't know what else to tell you!!!
you should post your question on the kellymom boards - the LCs there are fantastic.

Is the pain while he's nursing or right after he finishes nursing? If it is right after he finishes nursing it could be a vasospasm. That was my problem, and thankfully it is very easy to fix:

You can try mylicon gas drops to help w/the gas- you can put it right in the bottle. Soothies cool pads help with the pain. Gerber breast therapy or lansinoh work well. You have to let the nipple air out/dry out as much as possible after you nurse, then put the cream on. Pump every other time if you can just to give yourself a break.
I had the same problem as you and my daughter was tongue-tied - but everyone told me it was fine and they didn't know what to do. Sometimes they miss that - have the pede check at your next visit if you can just to be sure. It could be thrush, too. I cried daily for weeks nursing DD, I'm sorry & hope it goes away soon.
I actually had the same cuts when DD was probably around 7-8 months. I thought it was thrush because of the burning when she nursed. It took a few days before I actually noticed the cuts and figured that was the problem.
Are you sure his tongue is still in the right position? It sounds like the cuts could be from his bottom gums if his tongue is wrong.
I would put the lanisol cream on after every time you nurse. Also look for soothies breast pads. They are cool gel pads that help a ton. I'm thinking that once the cuts heal, it should be better.
