WWYD? Would you leave or not?

LOL - ok that sounds a bit dramatic (we'll see if it lures people in!)

If you were in a third-floor apartment, with laundry on the first floor next to the elevator (and your apt. was 4-5 doors down from the elevator), would you "run down" to the first floor to put a load of laundry in/retrieve it while DC was napping (leaving DC alone in the locked apt. momentarily)?

Also, would you "run out to your car" to grab something/groceries, etc. (again, parking is next to the building, but on the first floor)?

Just curious what others would do...

  • In the town that I live in, YES.

  • Loading the player...
  • I probably would as long as it wouldn't take long.

  • Only if I could bring the monitor with me so I could hear my child but I would be so paranoid that I would be zooming there and back.
  • Laundry inside the building, yes.  Outside to the car, probably not.  I'm not really sure why but something makes me say no to leaving him inside while I go out?
  • Yes, unless it was crack town.
  • Yes, but I'd take a baby monitor with me.?
  • I would hurry and tripple check that I had the keys but yeah, I guess I would.

  • Yeah, I go check the mail in the building when DS is napping sometimes...whoops
  • Yes, I would and take the monitor.  To me that is really not that different than being on a different floor of the house or in the backyard.
  • I think it might depend on the neighborhood, but probably I would do it. ?Not exactly the same, but we live in a townhouse with a parking lot out front. ?I'll walk across the parking lot to the mailboxes or out to my car (not directly in front of the house) to get something out.

  • NO!  I live on a busy street and just wouldn't want to take that chance (I live in a nice area of Los Angeles, but don't trust people).  What if there was a fire?   or an earthquake?   or she threw up and started choking?  I worry a lot, but not something i could do.
  • yes.

  • No no no.  I wouldn't.  I have lived in an apartment (granted, it was a high rise) with laundry on the basement level.  There have been multiple times that I went down to do laundry while either the sitter or my husband were with the baby.  Each of these happened either while out walking the dog or doing laundry: once, I was trapped in the elevator and had to wait for it to be fixed (hello, claustrophobia - NIGHTMARE), once there was an apartment-wide fire alarm and everyone had to be evacuated and once there was a city-wide blackout (had to climb 26 flights of stairs in the pitch black - I realize this is exceptionally bad luck!).  I would have had a heart attack if any of these things had happened while DC was alone, even if napping.  I realize you ony have three floors so that changes things, but given my experience - no way.
  • I'm in a third floor apartment and laundry is in the basement.  I do not leave the apartment at all ever with DD alone inside.  But, I also live in New York City so I'm used to being more vigilant than someone who lives in a suburb.

  • I used to all the time - but it was a very small building, only 8 units in all.  I'd go to my car too, my parking spot was right in front.

  • No way.  I would have said no anyway but especially not after hearing about getting stuck in an elevator.  Just the idea of being stuck in an elevator while my child is alone in my apartment is enough to make me feel ill.

  • Yes and yes.  Stairs maybe if you're that paranoid like the pp about elevators.

Seriously, women have to shovel snow and mow the lawn while still having kids in the house........ or they check the mail and end up chatting with a neighbor.

It makes me wonder what farm women 100 years would do with our paranoia.... some might just pee their pants laughing.  :P

  • No but I'm paranoid like that.
