What to Expect, The first year...

Has anyone read this book?    Dh picked it up for me because I liked What to Expect When You're Expecting   But so far what I have read (the first 30-50 pages or so) seems to be full of incorrect information based on what I learned in my childbirth prep and newborn care classes.    I checked and I do have the most recent edition,  has anyone else found this?

 Thanks!

  • I have, and also found some of it to be outdated, but not too bad.

  • I have used it a bunch so far and my pediatrician also said it's helpful. ?BTW, hope your cold is getting better and baby comes out soon!

  • I didn't really like that book and ended up donating it. I don't remember it being really incorrect or anything but felt like it had a condescending tone. Like "your a dumbe new parent" kinda thing.

I LOVE "The Baby Book" by Dr Sears. It is huge, but has everything! I looked things up a few times a day in the early months and still use it as a reference. I highly recommend it! (BTW- Dr Sears is very pro-attachment parenting, but I have found his books to be failry balanced even if you are not an attachment parent!)

  • I too did not enjoy this book.  The whole book was mostly geared towards BF moms, and since we adopted, that was not something we did.
  • I found that Dr. Sears book was pretty good and I wasn't so into the What to Expect books.  He is *definately* attachement parenting oriented, but you can still find a fairly balanced presentation.
  • I've found it somewhat helpful. It's good to have on hand. The "Your Baby Week By Week" or whatever it is called is SO not helpful. It's totally off on so many things and written for the lowest common denominator. Sorry, that's kinda mean but I found What to Expect at least a little bit better. It's a good reference for health related concerns, symptoms etc. The books I've enjoyed the most are baby brain development books like "What's Going on in There?" and "Bright from the Start""Einstein Never Used Flashcards."

  • I so wanted to love the "your baby week by week" one since I liked that pregnancy book but it SUCKED>  Plus, it had "milestone charts" for every single WEEK and that really stressed me out.

I really didn't end up using any baby books.   I got the Dr. Sears Baby BOok from the library and I liked it, but it was really intimidating to me - all of the attachment parenting stuff for instance.  But what's really funny, is that all of the attachment parenting things ended up being things I did naturally anywaya.  So I dont' know why it stressed me out.  But I think the first few weeks/months post partum I was jsut a wreck anyway.  :)

Really, what I learned most from for Ben's first year was the Evergreen Parent/Baby classes, and then teh BCC Wobblers Class in the fall.   LOVED both of those.   I do better learning from people though than books anyway.

And trust your mommy instinct.  You will know what to do.  And if not, google it.  :)

  • I loved all the Dr. Sears books I got. I took the necessary information out of whatever I read though. I also had the breastfeeding mother's companion, which I read front to back and many times over. I had trouble in that dept. and it helped me troubleshoot.?

  • I have it, and have maybe looked at it twice since Mikayla was born.  If I'm not sure I mostly google stuff, or ask other moms.  :)
