  • Well, I do think it is interesting that peanut/food allergies are only on the rise in wealthy/westenrized countries. I remember watching a  "60 Minutes" segment a few months ago on "Plumpynut" which is basically a type of fortified peanut butter that is being used to save thousands of starving children around the world. They were asking about nut allergies and concerns over them, since the plumpynut was being given to all these children - under age 1 - and they were saying nut allergies just don't exist there.

Not to say that all allergies are psychosomatic, etc., but I do believe that we may be in part responsible for "creation" of allergies, including delaying foods, living in such an uber-sanitized environment, etc.

  • well my BFF has to carry an epi-pen around because her 3 year old has such a severe reaction to peanuts. I've been there when she had to rush her to the ER b/c she couldn't breathe...so NO--its not "made up"!

  • I used to think that allergies have gotten out of control, and that a lot of parents were making them up. ?Then, my son went into anaphalaxis (sp) from his nut allergy. ?Needless to say, I am a believer now. ?We are constantly watching what he eats, and we have to carry 2 epi=pens at all times?
