Anyone paint their crib?

My parents have an unused crib that was originally bought for my niece.  I would like to use it so it doesn't just sit in my parents' home unused and wasted, but it's a cherry oak color and DH painted the nursery chocolate brown (brown and pink nursery).  So I really feel that white furniture will look nicer than oak furniture.  So we're thinking of painting the crib, but don't want to sand it down, paint it, and ruin it.  I'm worried the crib surface will be scratchy and rough instead of the smooth finish it has right now.  Anyone have any experience painting a finished-wood crib?  TIA!

Re: Anyone paint their crib?

  • I did paint my crib, it is currently drying in the garage. It looks great, but it took a coat of primer and 2 coats of white paint to cover the darkness of the wood. We did this because we were given the crib, still less expensive than buying a new one. If I had this to do again, I would have sold the one we got on Craigslist and bought a different one. Too much work for my taste. LOL.

  • Be really careful to use non toxic paint!
  • I haven't and probably wouldn't just because of the tendency of babies to chew on their crib. I wouldn't trust that we sanded/primed/painted/sealed well enough and would constantly worry about toxins or paint chips getting ingested.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • My mom repaints everything and nothing has ever been rough.  But do use non-toxic paint!
  • Throwing out my 2 cents here...if you could get a paint sprayer it will allow for a smooth finish and since its lighter coats, better sticking. if you are worried about chewing you can get those plasit protectors for the rails, but my kids never chewed so i never had a need for them.
    Good luck!
  • i painted mine and my brothers' old crib for my niece to use... i used craft paint because we did it in a bunch of different colors... just make sure it is non toxic and coat it with something so the paint doesn't scratch off as easily (i can't remember what we used... it was 4 years ago). ?here are some photos of what we did...

  • Thanks ladies!  We bought the non-VOC, non-toxic paint meant for furniture and DH painted the dresser first using it (trial run).  Then we'll go for the big kahuna and paint the crib.  DH also spray painted the handles of the dresser pink and it's such a cute little detail!  Since we're doing a low-budget nursery, small details matter!
