It just occured to me that maybe I should start teaching them now and so I started with 1-he now recognizes it. I mean he can count and say the alphabet but am I supposed to teach him to recognize them now?
My son recognizes all letters and numbers 0-10. So yes, it's a
good thing to teach him. My mom teaches elementary and she's told
me many kindergarteners don't know letters/numbers.
DS - June 2006
DD1 - November 2007
DD2 - August 2010
Anthony is 2 1/2 and he recognizes all of his letters, capital only, but not his numbers. He knows his alphabet and how to count to 12. I don't think you have to teach them now as I am sure they will in pre-school, but it probably wouldn't hurt to try if he seems receptive.
It can't hurt to start now - go on ahead! I started with my DD right around when she turned 2, just here and there, not every day or anything. She recognizes about 10 letters and numbers 0-9. So I'm sure your DS could learn them pretty quickly!
She did at some point the year she was 3. She's 4 (in October) & now can write all & knows all the sounds/phonics. She can count to 100+...all this thanks to Montessori preschool, not me--LOL!

You can teach recognition with everyday things just by casually mentioning it. Alexander recognizes his numbers and letters. He is at the point now where he is learning how to actually count items to tell you how many there are. I've heard that that is something that some children struggle with...they can count and recognize numbers but don't put the two together so much.
Never hurts to give it a try and see where you get with it.
For whatever reason, my little guy started showing a HUGE interest in letters and numbers before he turned 2- and he knew all of his letters and 1-10 by the time he turned 2. With very little "teaching" by me- it was mostly through books, magnetic letters and the foam letters and numbers for the bathtub. He was 2 in December and those darn letters and numbers are still one of his favorite toys! So if you can find a way to get him interested in them, just take it from there.
