Another stroller question re: double v. single

So, I don't want to invest in a high-priced stroller if I'm just going to have to get rid of it in a year.  We plan to have baby #2 relatively soon, so at that point I'll need a double.  What would you do?  Are you just going to buy singles and then replace them when/if #2 comes along?

  • Have you looked at the Phil and Ted's yet?   It has a second seat attachment that doesn't really add any extra room to the stroller.

  • If I had it to do over again, I definitely wouldn't have bought the Graco Metrolite.  It sits in our garage gathering dust.  I used a carseat carrier stroller frame for the first six months or so and it was perfect.  Then I made the mistake of buying the Metrolite.  I ended up getting much more use out of a $20 umbrella stroller I bought at Wal-Mart on a whim.  Go figure!

I have two children but didn't buy our double stroller until DD #2 was almost 4 months old, and I think that was a mistake.  I was opposed on principle to any kind of double stroller because I thought they were all huge and cumbersome.  But a neighbor of mine bought the Joovy Caboose ultralitght and I liked the way it looked.  I got one too and it's been a wonderful double stroller.

If I could have seen into the future, I would have bought the Joovy in lieu of the Graco Metrolite.  It's light and collapses very easily.  You can use it with a carseat while baby is small, then like a regular stroller when baby is finally sitting up.  My older DD loves to ride standing on the back.

Albee Baby has good prices on the Joovy, depending on the color choice:  I wish I'd known there was a pink one since I have two girls!

  • I got a Valco which also has a second seat attachment.  Since I'm not pregnant again yet and my 19 mo old is very active I wonder if we'll ever use the second seat but I loved the Valco for 1.
  • we have 2 single strollers and will get a double and keep the singles..  DH is an avid runner.  He won't always have both kids with him so we would like the option of being able to take the single or double...
  • we will buy a double when Twosey comes along. they are big and i am glad to have had the single all this time. as far as spending the money, remember that good joggers like the BOB have an excellent resale value- esp if they are not that old. i have been offered almost what i paid for mine by ppl in moms group who know i am expecting. however, we want to keep it for the days when we only have one child out on a walk...

as far as more portable/umbrella strollers, definitely don't get a double right away. there is no double on the market that is as light and convenient as any single. period. in fact, since i sling my babies, we are putting off the double as long as possible...

again, love the idea but i have an issue with how low to the ground the baby is with the attachment. i know that's weird but i just can't get past it...

  • ditto rayskitt.  I'm amazed at the resale value of the BOBs.  forget putting money in stocks, put them in your BOB! lol.  I have a friend who only uses that stroller, even indoors.  I have another stroller which I love, peg pliko p3, but we use the BOB a ton.  If you plan to go outside at all, I'd spend money on this stroller, then sell it (which will be easy) when you need the double.  GL!

  • FYI i test drove a BOB Duallie at REI today. the thing is wide but handles as smoothly as the single. we were impressed :)
