Concerned with Joey's fluid INtake

So... my son has always been a big drinker (yeah yeah yeah... like mother like son)...  but at night.  I have to have at least 3, yep you read right, 3 sippy cups next to the bed for him.  (I put about half an inch of mots for tots and the rest water).

He drinks ALL of them throughout the night.

last night... he drank one as he went to bed.  Then he came down to bed with us about 10 ish.. (yes we partially cosleep).  And he drank THREE more throughout the night.

He goes through at least two night time diapers and usually leaks through them.  I have to change him once throughout the night if I wake up and catch it...  (he sleeps through the diaper change blessedly).

But...  I have started to think that this is really not right and I wondered how much fluid your kids take.

Should I be scared/worried?

Re: Concerned with Joey's fluid INtake

  • Like mothers like sons.  Kian is right there with Joey.  We get home from school and he immediately drinks 2 sippy cups full, sometimes one more with dinner, another before bed.  Luckily he sleeps through the night but he wakes up and drinks 1 or 2 more.  He soaks through his diaper almost every night but we leave it till morning.

I think at daycare he gets sippy cups only at am snack, lunch, and pm snack so I was going to talk to them about adding more drinking breaks and see if that helps.

  • DS occasionally takes a sippy of water to bed with him but barely drinks any of it. ?He usually doesn't have any at night. ?I would try to encourage drinking more during the day and would also not put any juice in the cup. ?I would worry about the sugar on his teeth during the night (even if it's a small amount). ?I do think he should get used to not drinking so much at night. ?Even if you aren't planning on potty training for a long time, he'll need to have less intake at night whenever that happens. ?Good luck! ?I would just take smaller steps towards less fluid intake at night.
  • I would try to chart how much fluid he's drinking on average during each 24 hour period, maybe over about a week's time.  Then I'd run it by the doctor just to check.

You never know - sometimes an underlying medical condition might cause excessive thirst, so to me it would be worth checking into.

i agree. and maybe you need to try and make him drink more during the day. when you start potty training, this is going to be a big barrier/issue.

as far as underlying medical condition, i *just* spoke to my pedi about this. excessive thirst can be a sign of diabetes. due tothis, i would definitely cut out the juice until you have an answer. truitt drinks about one juice box a day total.

  • Is he getting enough to eat?  Not that you aren't feeding him but Gideon doesn't eat very much at dinner so when we go up to hang out before bed he downs his milk and I'm certain that him waking up in the middle of the night lately has to do with him being hungry. It's so frustrating.

  • Like others said, I would keep track of what he is drinking during the day.

also, if he does go through 3 sippy cups.  Why not dilute each one of them a little more than the first so the last one is just water.  He may just be waking up for the juice because that is now is routine (like babies waking up to take a bottle and not really needing it).

  • I agree, maybe it would average out to be a normal amount if you track it for a few days. And you'll need to figure out how many oz your different sippy cups hold (because I'm not the only one with 5 different kinds of sippy cups, right???)

Eloise drinks at least 7oz of milk at night, often 14oz. I'd be happier if it were water, but only milk will pacify her. And she's a milk addict.

But during the day I know she won't drink much if she's really busy/having fun - so I pick her up from school and she's barely made a dent in the one 10oz sippy (water or juice) I sent even though I can see they offered it to her 3 or 4 times that day. And she'll chug it all on the way home.

And I really have to watch her milk intake because she will drink 49oz of milk if I let her (or if DH and I aren't telling each other how many refills we've done.)

I was thinking the same thing. Days Kendall doesn't eat much....she wakes up early in the morning (like 4ish) BEGGING for milk (I won't give it to her until she's up for the day at like 9-10am).
