Re: whats the odds i have a redhead?

  • Anything is possible.  Neither DH (obviously since he is African American) nor I have blond hair.  I had dirty blond as a child, but it was just really light brown.

Our chances for a blond were less than 10%.

  • You may want to google, but I have heard that in order to have a red haired child BOTH parents must have red hair in their family.  Not necessairly red hair, just in the family.  My Dad and my neice both have red hair, and I have brown.  But I definately got a red head :)
  • I agree with pp it is hard to know what will happen.  I have dark brown hair (almost black) and DH is a redhead.  We got a blonde.  Plus we are aware her hair color might change still.

  • I'm a redhead and I think it skips a generation, my grandma on my mom's side was a redhead when she was younger but grew into more brown.  My dad had some red in his beard.  My 2 brothers are toe-head blonde and dark brown.

When DH was little he was strawberry blonde.  MIL is hoping for a Ronald McDonald kid, which is fine if it's a girl but sometimes red just doesn't look as good on boys...

  • yeah i did warn my DH that we will continue to have children until i have a red head! lol

  • There are more than 2 genes that make up hair color. ?Its possible if you both have red hair in the family but too complicated to figure out on a message board. Good luck!

  • Sidenote - I was convinced the nurses left iodine on my daughters head when they handed her to me.  They had to tell me her hair was actually red. lol
  • From my understanding (I've done some research on this before), your baby will definitely carry the gene, which is recessive. If the father has the gene (doesn't have to show up, but sometimes will in the form of a reddish beard, etc.) your baby will have a 50% chance of being a redhead. If he doesn't carry the gene, your child will not have red hair.

I'm a redhead from two brown-haired people, each of whom who had one red-haired parent and one dark-haired parent. My sister has brown hair.

  • I'm a redhead. My father was as was both his parents, my entire side of my paternal grandpa are all redheads. I'm auburn but was strawberry blonde as a little girl after being born with flaming auburn hair.

We are one gene away from being albino us redheads - did you know that? We are also statistically NOT attracted to other redheads. A friend of a friend has been doing a documentary on redheads for the last two years!

My husband has a lot of red in his blonde hair which gets distinctly close to auburn in the winter. I have two aunts as well on my mother's side who are redheads (Mom is Danish, Dad is Scottish).

Both my husband and I have blue eyes.

We're totally anticipating a flaming redhead to be born. ?We're both recessive across the board.

  • I have red hair, as well. But my DH and his whole side have very dark hair, so I think my chances are slim.  I hope our child gets his green eyes, though.

Yes. You have either a 50% chance or a 0% chance, depending on DH's genetic make-up.

Like all genes, the baby inherits one for hair color from each parent. In order to have red hair (which is a recessive trait) you must get the red hair gene from both parents. As a redhead, you only have red hair genes, so you will definitely pass one to your child. So it's all up to DH's genes. It's possible that he has a red hair gene even if he doesn't have red hair, because it is recessive. In that case, each of your children will have a 50% chance of red hair. It's also possible that he doesn't have the gene, in which case you have a 0% chance, no matter how many children you have.

It's not possible to know from looking at someone whether they carry the recessive redhead gene. However, if either of his parents have red hair, then he definitely carries it. (Which is why it is common for red hair to "skip a generation"). If neither of his parents have red hair, but one of his siblings does, he has a 25% chance of carrying the gene. If no one in the extended family for generations has red hair - he probably doesn't.
