I guess I am obsessed with finding an answer for what went wrong - I highly doubt that anything was wrong with the babies but the placentas have been sent for culturing and chromosomal analysis anyway....
I did start bleeding at 13 weeks but for 4 weeks my babies thrived and looked great. Right when everything was looking up and the hematoma was nearly gone - that's when I started having the contractions (that I thought were false) and the next day my water broke....I had the contractions on New Year's Day - I didn't call the doc because it was a holiday and I felt like they would just tell me it was normal - now I feel so guilty thinking that if I had gone in that day to the hospital that they might have saved the babies.....I was always worried about incompetent cervix, but I thought that with IC you didn't feel anything and I definitely felt contractions, cramps and some heaviness before the water broke. Also, if it wasn't IC, what could have caused my water to break from the inside? I know I'm rambling but I just feel that I need to have an answer and that it be something I can prevent next time. I just feel so doomed to repeat this again - It's hard to think I will ever have a baby - I just never expected a late loss
Re: what causes second trimester losses?
We had ENDLESS tests done, but they came up with nothing. Our little girl had multiple abnormalities, ranging from an anencephaly to bilateral club feet. They did a CVS, early anatomy scan, tons and tons of ultrasounds, an autopsy, and every gene test possible in the country. Nothing. No answers and no telling if it will happen again...just gotta roll the dice I guess!
Good luck! Stay positive and know that you are not alone...
I am so sorry for your losses. 2nd tri losses can be caused by genetic disorders such as Down Syndrome (in our case), incompitent cervex, maternal infection and often times the cause 2nd tri losses are unknown. Try your best to stay positive and know that you are not alone. Sadly, there are quite a few of us here.
Hi, I am so sorry for your loss. I know it is very shocking to have a loss after 12 wks, the so-called "safe zone". ?
Your loss sounds similar to mine, but mine was at 21 wks. ?I didn't have the bleeding until after the cramping but otherwise it is very similar. ?All of my tests came back and showed nothing, my son was healthy and perfect. ?My dr said that they think it was due to an incompetent cervix, but they won't know until I am pg again. ?I will have to get progesterone shots weeks 18-36 (or something like that) and they may put in a cerclage next time. ?
If you ever need to chat or anything page me, I am often on the TTCAL page.
Cindy?
My story is very similiar to yours. Just 3 days ago I was having some bad cramps, I never had any bleeding so I wasn't truly concerned about the cramping, I was always told it was normal but then my water broke and we rushed to the hospital. Our baby still had a heart beat Thursday but there was no fluid around the baby and we knew it wouldn't be long. Soon after there was no heart beat and we were scheduled for a D&C on Saturday.
I sometimes think that if I had went to the hospital as soon as I had started cramping that everything would be okay, but after talking to my OB she reassured me that the miscarriage was inevitable. Its very difficult for me and DH but I know that eventually it will be easier.
Earlier in the pregnancy we had a CVS testing done because of an abnormal u/s but the testing came back negative. We thought we were in the clear. I had just gone into the second trimester, at 14w 2d, so I thought for sure we would have a beautiful healthy baby boy.
Anyway, I'm hoping to find some sort of closure with the pathology results. Knowing exactly what happened to prevent this from happening again would be helpful, but we might not ever know.
Good Luck with everything.
