Have any of you taken levothyroxine and BF'd?

I have nodules in my thyroid and my surgeon prescribed levothyroxine to try and shrink the nodules. I picked it up today and read the insert. I'm a little freaked out by all the warnings. I've taken synthroid before, but not while BFing. I informed the nurse at the surgeon's office that I'm still BFing, but she didn't seem concerned. The info I've read online is very contradictory. I'm just wondering if anyone else has been in his situation or gotten a definite ok for BFing while on this med. I'm going to call DD's pediatrician tomorrow just to be sure. TIA!

  • I took it while breastfeeding. From my understanding, very little secretes into your breastmilk and the benefits to the mother far outweigh any possible negatives for the baby.

  • Yep. As far as I have been told, it passes through your breast milk just like your regular thyroid hormones would. It shouldn't be a problem as long as your levels are in the normal range.

  • The Pedi probably wont have as much info as the?pharmacist. Call the pharmacy (or any 24 hour pharmacy if yours is closed) and ask about it.
  • yup! it was fine by pedi and OB, so shouldnt be a problem!
  • Yep!  And ditto PP!  No problems here
  • Yes. I was told that it was important that I stay on my levothyroxin and that there were no risks to my baby while bf'ing.
