We used the straw ones for a while and still do sometimes, but she didn't get the hang of the straw ones until she was used to using the ones she has to turn up. Now she wants to use the straw ones that way and she doesn't get anything out of it...but she can sure use the straw in Mommy's drink.
we alternate bt the nuby flip top straw and the playtex straw cup that you twist for the straw (vs. flip - does that make sense?)
i don't have a problem with them leaking, but the tops have to be on perfectly and tightly.
maddy never "got" the traditional sippy cup bc she wouldn't lift the cup up to get the water out, so we went to the straw, and i don't recall there being a lag time for her to figure it out, so she was about 8mos. i did have to cut the nuby, though, or else you have to suck really really hard to get the water out, and i don't think she'd be able to do it.
We use the Nuby Straw cups. We haven't had a lot of leaking problems. She can't figure out the other ones. I gave it to her around 9 months old and it took her a few days but she figured it out.
A straw sippy is the only one Natalie can figure out how to use. We use the Nuby Grip N Sip. It has a little flip top so you can flip the straw down when it's not in use.

the little First Years cups with the lids... disposable but I don't dispose of them... are the ONLY one's Joey will take. I have tried EVERY sippy out there I think because he can chew through the lids... and nope!
He likes his first years!
but the ones with the straw... he takes the straw out.
We use the First Years disposables as well. I refuse to take apart the valves, straws, etc. It annoys the crap out of me. The First Years leak a little but she only wanders with water so it's not a huge deal. Milk ones stay in the high chair or someone else holding it. She uses spout tops for water, straws for milk. Started with the straws about 9 months. I cut a bunch of disposable straws down to size so I can chuck them ofter each use. Cups and tops go in the dishwasher.

Ditto this. She has always taken this cup. We do occasionally use the disposable ones (we don't toss either) or the first one Harmony listed. But she prefers the straw cups.
Re: Which sippy do you use?
These are my favorite. They don't leak: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2585524
She didn't care for this one: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2908662
We were using the Nuby's, but they seemed to leak very often AND the spouts gave out quickly.

We use these by First Years and love them!

They don't leak and there is no valve involved as it's built in to the top.
