Childcare

What are parents looking for with childcare? What is import to you as a parent?

Re: Childcare

  • honestly? after touring like 6 daycares and doing this whole search twice now (once for my older one, again more recently), here's what actually moved the needle for me vs what I thought would matter going in.

the stuff that's just a hard no if it's missing:

    • low turnover. if I ask "how long have your teachers been here" and the answer is vague or it's "oh she just started last month," that's an instant red flag for me. kids that age need consistent faces, not a rotating cast
    • a real sick policy. I don't want my kid exposed to a fever-and-vomiting free-for-all, and I also don't want to be side-eyed for keeping mine home when he's sick. this tells me a lot about how the place is run overall
    • ratios. I actually count during the tour, not just take their word for it

what surprised me by mattering more than I expected:

    • how they talk TO the kids, not just about them. like are they narrating what they're doing, giving choices ("water or milk?") or is it just herding and redirecting all day. you can tell within like 10 minutes of watching
    • outdoor time. I didn't think this would be such a dealbreaker for me until I toured a place that was basically 7 hours indoors and it made ME feel claustrophobic just standing there
    • whether kids are doing actual stuff — pouring, wiping tables, helping with snack — vs just toys in bins all day. I want him building competence, not just being occupied

what mattered less than I thought it would:

    • fancy toys/equipment. honestly some of the best environments I saw were kind of sparse and simple. it's about how things are used, not how much stuff there is
    • extra classes (music, art add-ons). nice to have but not worth paying triple for if the core day-to-day isn't solid

the thing nobody prepares you for:

    • the gut feeling. I toured two places with almost identical checklists on paper and picked the one that just felt calmer and warmer when we walked in. couldn't fully explain it, just knew

and honestly the biggest one for me now with two kids — communication. even just a one-line update at pickup ("he napped great, ate all his lunch, had a rough moment at circle time but recovered") makes SUCH a difference in whether I trust what's happening when I'm not there. a place that goes silent all day makes me anxious even if nothing's actually wrong
