2nd Trimester

Bleeding/blood clots in the 2nd Trimester

I’m a little over 14 weeks pregnant—I’ll be 15 weeks on Monday. On Wednesday morning, I suddenly started bleeding and passed some blood clots. I immediately called my OB, who got me in right away. They did both an internal and external exam, checked the baby’s heart rate, and everything looked good—her heart rate was strong and nothing appeared to be wrong with her positioning.

They sent me home, but I continued bleeding through Thursday. Then on Friday morning, I woke up to find I had bled through my underwear, pad, and sheets. I passed two large blood clots, so I went to the ER. They took my blood and did several abdominal ultrasounds. Again, the baby’s heart rate was perfect, and she seemed completely fine—but they couldn’t determine the cause of the bleeding.

Later that same day, I saw my OB again. They suggested the bleeding may be due to a low-lying placenta, and that intercourse with my husband on Tuesday night could have irritated or disrupted it.

Has anyone experienced something similar? I’m still bleeding and passing small clots, but I don’t have any cramping, contractions, or fever. I’m really trying not to panic—I know that at 14 weeks, there’s not much doctors can do either way. I’m staying on bedrest and trying to stay positive, but the ongoing bleeding and clots are really scary. I’m avoiding Google because it only makes my anxiety worse, so I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been through something like this, especially during the second trimester.

Re: Bleeding/blood clots in the 2nd Trimester

  • I’m going through something similar. I’m at 14 weeks now, but I’ve been bleeding off and on at various levels of heaviness with clotting since about 11 weeks. I do have a mild blood disorder, which typically just gives me heavier periods, so I expected to see some blood during this process (my mom went through the same thing and has the same disorder). However, I was NOT prepared for how much blood there would be and how long I’d keep bleeding. It scared me so much one time I went straight to the ER. They discovered that I had a subchorionic hemorrhage, which I guess is pretty common, especially if you have a bleeding disorder. Did ultrasounds and baby was totally fine, strong heartbeat, and very active. Even though I have all this information, it still feels like a “wait and see” approach, which skyrockets my anxiety. I just hate feeling so powerless during this process. I’m just trying to take it day by day, and when the anxiety hits, breathe through it. You’re not alone. Keep acknowledging your fears and talking through it - hopefully you have a good support system at home. And try to balance those negative anxiety spirals by intentionally imagining some positive outcomes too. There’s really no playbook for pregnancy, so you get to make this experience your own. Hope this helps ❤️.

  • I’m doing the same thing at 17 weeks the doctor said they can’t see where mines coming from but it’s more then likely coming from placenta separation and that most of the time with rest and no lifting or strenuous activity it can heal it’s self. So I’m taking it easy and hoping and praying this is what will happen so far baby is doing really well. Another thing they are watching closely is my amniotic fluid is low end normal to
  • Its so scary I hope you get more answers soon! I bled pink but not soaking red and passed a big round clot that I thought was my mucous plug or something. I went straight to the er. Im 16w and ob said it wasn't my fluid leaking and that I could have placenta previa and I could learn more and confirm it at my next anatomy scan ultrasound. I resisted googling it, but I learned it can correct itself by 3rd trimester so that's what I'm praying for all of us experiencing this! Like you there was no pain or cramping.

The confirmation can help with updating birth plans etc. Take it easy!!<3
