My kid was texting a stranger… and I actually found out who it was

Hey everyone, I’m still kinda shaking as I type this. Last week I noticed my 13 y/o being super secretive with their phone. Not unusual for a teen, right? But something about it just felt off. I ended up checking their messages (which I hate doing, but I just had a gut feeling), and saw she was talking to someone I didn’t recognize. It was an adult-sounding name, no profile pic, and the convo had been going on for weeks.

I asked my kid who it was, and of course I got the “just a friend” and “you’re overreacting” responses. But something didn’t sit right.

So… I did a little digging. I used one of those people search tools (peoplefinder.info) just typed in the name, the city, and BAM. I got enough info to realize this person was DEFINITELY not a teen. Like, not even close. 

We’ve since blocked him and had a huge heart-to-heart with our kid about online safety. 

Has anyone else had to deal with something like this??
