1st Trimester

Working out-gym anxiety

So I’m 5w1-2d and when I confirmed pregnancy (no ultrasound yet) I told my doctor I go to the gym and now I’m so afraid that I’ll do to much and something bad is going to happen. The doctor told me since I did it before pregnancy it should be fine and also that I just need to listen to my body, if it says to stop then stop etc. is anyone else still able to exercise and are you also riddled with anxiety about it?

Re: Working out-gym anxiety

  • You are fine. Please listen to your doctor. Women run marathons in their 3rd trimester.  Women lift weights through pregnancy. If you do not trust your Doc's decision that it's ok. Then you better find one that you tryst for easy questions like this. As the questions and decisions may get more complicated/truck as pregnancy moves on.

  • It's completely normal to feel anxious about exercising during pregnancy. Many people continue their fitness routines without issues, especially if they were active before. Listening to your body, as your doctor advised, is key. If something doesn't feel right, it's okay to stop or adjust your routine. Consider consulting a prenatal fitness specialist for personalized guidance. You might also find support in pregnancy-focused workout groups or classes, where everyone is experiencing similar concerns. Remember, you're not alone in this, and your well-being is important.

I totally get how you’re feeling — I was super anxious about continuing to work out too when I first found out I was pregnant. Like your doctor said, if you were active before, it’s usually safe to keep going with modifications and listening to your body. I’ve been using my DribbleUp smart equipment for lighter workouts at home, and their app has been great for tracking intensity. Plus, dribbleup customer service has been really helpful when I had questions about adjusting my routines. You're not alone — just take it slow and trust your instincts.

It's completely normal, but as your doctor told you, stop when your body tells you to.

I am also in my first trimester, it’s my first baby, and I worked out pretty regularly before pregnancy. The reason i’m not nervous about it is because I have a close friend who works out wwaaayy more than I do and she’s in her 8th month of pregnancy and has kept up her workout routine as much as her body allows. She workouts with a group fitness program. I mostly just do it by myself or with my husband. Maybe try joining a group fitness class that designed for pregnant folks or has at least 1 other pregnant person in the group.

I'm a Marine, and just found out I am at 5 weeks myself! I went from being pretty active in the gym to scared of exercise overnight. But I have heard the same advice- if you were active before, you can stay active. Even if you WEREN'T active, I've read that you can even start doing light weights/high reps and moderate cardio, and it will actually be good for baby! Not only that, but you may actually build muscle faster because of baby's stem cells (with no negative effect on baby!).

I highly recommend "Yeah Baby!" By Jillian Michaels. She gives a lot of good workout and nutrition advice to keep pregnant moms active. Really reduced my anxiety.

Agree with everyone that you can continue to workout and modify as needed. With my first, I continued hip hop dancing until two weeks before my induction. That was more recreational. I’m going to ask my doctor with this pregnancy if I can continue being in my dance troupe (more intensive) through November with a January due date. I’m not sure if that will work as there are typically jumps in performance dance, but I’m curious to get my doctor’s thoughts.
