To tell or not to tell???

I'll be in Salt Lake City next week for a work meeting.

2009 brought big changes and I have a new position officialy starting next week and our entire team will be geting together to discuss these changes and how they effect everyone.  Plus a getting to know you, since in the past, this particular team, that I will now be a part of was in a different region, with a different regional boss.

For the last year, I have reported directly to our regional boss and my new position, I will report to someone in SLC who then reports to this same regional boss.  I have worked closely with this regional boss and really respect him.  He has told me from the begginning, he is all for family, and family comes first.  My predessessor in my position I'm leaving had 2 kids while doing the job, and when that position was offered to me on my 3rd day back from maternity leave last time, he said never to be afraid to have more children, or be afraid to tell him.

SO..... I don't see him very often although he lives locally.  (He travels TONS)  But he will be in these meetings next week.

I will be 7.5 weeks when I'm there next week.  Should I just tell him (and my new boss whom I do know)  Or should I wait until later.

SInce he has been so open, I do not want to "keep something" from him.  Plus I will see him in person, and I do not see him on a regular basis.  (Even though he has been my boss)   I don't even have my 1st appt until the following week though.

Last month while working on a big project in Cali, he and another co-worker (the girl who had the 2 kids while doing my current job.  They are exactly 2 years apart too, the same as Audrey and the new baby will be)  They both asked me when the next baby was coming?  I was in the 2WW then and just said  something about needing to get on it and at this point they will be aleast 2 years apart.  (they both knew initally we were shooting for 20 months when I first came back from the 1st maternity leave)

PHew!  That is long and complicated!  Now to decide to tell or not to tell next week??????

ughhhhhhhhhh... plus I *really* want to find out if our new short term disability benefits they told me about REALLY apply to maternity leave!  (the 26 weeks paid leave)  Our HR guy is in SLC so it'd also be the perfect oppurtunity to talk to him.

  • Hmm that is a hard call. Since your early still but will be seeing bosses that you don't normally see in person.  I guess I would say to tell them since everyone will be together and your already talking about changes it would be a good segway.

  • As tempting as it is I think you should wait until you have had your first appmt and know everything is ok.  I don't think your being decieving or hiding something from them as many people don't even tell their family until they are further along.

  • I'd be too paranoid to tell work before my first appointment, but that's just me.  I think everyone would understand if you waited to tell them until later.

And HR is just a phone call away even if it would be nicer to meet in person... although you could chat with him about it anyway (because you're "thinking about TTC" or something like that).

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.  Hopefully you'll get those 26w paid!!  Holy moly!

  • I would tell, but that's just me. ?I'd ask him to keep it to himself because it's still early.
  • Hmmmm, that is a tough one. I think if I weren't having any really obvious nausea issues, I wouldn't mention it yet. I agree that you don'[t have to feel bad about "hiding" something since it is so early. On the other hand, if you do decide to tell them, it sounds like it will be a very supportive environment and I'm sure that would be fine too. I agree with asking the HR guy with some vague mention that you are "thinking about #2" or whatever. I was so paranoid about asking HR before I was pregnant about short term disability, figuring rumors might start to spread, then it turns out if I had wanted to purchase a policy (our HR doesn't cover it) I would have needed to go through our AFLAC agent and start it before I got pregnant! So it is not crazy to be asking ahead of time, or appearing to ask ahead of time. :) Good luck!
