1st Trimester

First ultrasound anxiety…

Pregnant with our first. Went to our first ultrasound this past Thursday at what we thought was 8 weeks. Ultrasound tech and PA informed us that the gestational sac and yolk sac were present but baby was unable to be detected. We were informed that we were measuring at 6 weeks. I am having no symptoms of miscarriage. No spotting, bleeding, or severe cramping. Theyre having me come back this week for a repeat but I’m scared that is not enough time for growth to detect something on the ultrasound….anyone else ever experience this? Any tips or words of advice/encouragement?

Re: First ultrasound anxiety…

  • I experienced this.  Unfortunately, my outcome was not good.  But one week is plenty of time.  At 7 weeks you should be able to hear a heartbeat and see those things on an ultrasound.  So next week you should be able to see a developing baby, hopefully a heartbeat, and get good news and they'll just assume you O'd later than your LMP indicated.

Or, it will show nothing more than you saw today.  Absolutely no change, which indicates that it's a Missed Miscarriage. That's what happened with mine.  I should've been 7 weeks along, I indicated 5.5 weeks.  I personally wasn't worried, as I don't have a 28 day cycle, but usually a 35 day cycle, so I just figured the dating they had was off.  The next week I expected growth, and unfortunately, nothing had changed.

All you can do right now is try to stay calm/relaxed, and tell yourself that you are PG TODAY and to love that baby no matter how long you have it; whether that is a few more days internally, several more weeks internally, or to the point of having a living baby.  You have no control over the outcome, so all you can do is love that baby as long as you have it, even if that's a very short time.

  • Thank you for the kind response and positive words! I’m trying to stay calm and remind myself that I am having all good signs of a pregnancy, and maybe it’s just early. We will hope for the best when I go in for the next ultrasound! Thank you again!
