Babies: 0 - 3 Months

My baby never stops nursing

I wish I was exaggerating but sometimes my baby wants to be on the tit for hours. Like hours.  She'll fall asleep with my nipple in her mouth so I'll take it out but as soon as I do she wakes up and cries because she wants it right back. I'll switch sides when she falls asleep so she's getting the fresh breast when she wakes up and she'll do the same thing on that side.  Today I started nursing her around 3p and I finally just gave up and gave her some milk that I had pumped at 11p. We slept for maybe 2 hours in that time span and she had 2.5 ounces of the pumped milk in a bottle. I'm getting a great output when I pump and I can hear her gulps when she first starts nursing but then it seems like at a certain point she isn't able to get any more milk even though it is there. What can I do or what could the problem be?

My baby does the same. He uses the boob for comfort. Almost like a pacifier because he falls asleep on the boob but will cry when I take it out of his mouth. The best advice I get is to keep baby awake while feeding - tickle his toes, move his arms, touch his little ears, take off the swaddle, etc so that he eats enough.  You can even try burping or changing the babies diaper in the middle of feeding to wake them up and keep them up during feeding.

  • One strategy is to try gently burping her before she falls into a deep sleep so that she’s less likely to wake up unsettled when you remove the nipple. You could also experiment with unlatching her when she begins to drowse, then reattaching after a brief pause.Offering a pacifier for comfort when she isn’t actively feeding helps too.
