MFM

I have heard/read that once a mom is 35, she is labeled “advanced maternal age” and is scheduled to see an MFM during her pregnancy. Does anyone have experience with them and what is it that they do that a regular OB visit doesn’t cover? I just turned 35 two weeks ago so this will be my first “old lady” pregnancy (lol) and I am wondering if/what to expect. Thank you!

Re: MFM

  • Following along since I'm AMA now too 😅 I believe in my last 2 groups, most of the AMA moms got the NIPT testing covered by insurance and maybe an extra ultrasound or 2?

  • I haven’t had my first appointment yet (I’m 37), but I somewhat think this will be dependent on other factors that would make you high risk in conjunction with age.
  • This is my second go around with MFM. I’m advanced maternal age, plus a type two diabetic and high blood pressure. They’ve been just doing ultrasounds and monitoring all of the risk factors. The last time I developed gestational and we went over a general list of foods to eat and monitored my sugar levels.
  • Ok I just had my first appointment today with my care coordinator, and she confirmed I will see MFM at least 2x during this pregnancy for additional scans (due to AMA since I will be 36 when I deliver), but if everything looks good that's it. I'll also confirm with my OB next week but I would expect some additional monitoring near the end of my pregnancy since my 2nd baby was born at 36 weeks due to a placental abruption
  • I had my first baby 2 years ago when I was 41. My only interactions with MFM were all my ultrasounds. My midwife sent me there instead of their regular ultrasound place due to my age. Everything was filtered back though my midwife. I had lots of ultrasounds, I lost count. I'm now pregnant with my second, and my first ultrasound is next week and they sent me straight there
  • I just had my first appointment this pregnancy and they want me to see a MFM doctor next month at week 13. I’m 34 right now but will be turning 35 one month exactly before my due date. I’m not really nervous, I just don’t really know what to expect or how many times I’ll need to go especially since my doctor said I’m pretty low risk (past pregnancy & birth + health). I imagine it’s just because I’ll be 35 at time of birth?
  • I just turned 37 and this will be my first experience with MFM. At this time they only have me scheduled for the 20 week ultrasound and then a genetic counseling appointment after. Although, my OBGYN just told me that genetic counseling appt. is not necessary unless they find something bc it may give me unnecessary anxiety bc they go over all the risks and possibilities bc of my age. She said if my NIPT comes back okay then I can cancel the consult.
