Silent Reflux

We found out our baby has CMPA and a lactose allergy, so I had to give up breastfeeding, and put him on a hypoallergenic formula. We have done Alimentum and are about to try Nutregen (more severe allergies). We have used probiotics, simethicone, we burp after feeding, hold up for 30 minutes after feeding. As soon as we put him down in his slightly tilted bassinet he goes into reflux starting with a horrible stuffy nose and wakes himself up. Does anyone have any other tips and tricks that they have used to make baby more comfortable with silent reflux?!

Re: Silent Reflux

  • Our baby has silent reflux as well, although doesn’t have a dairy allergy. We haven’t figured it out either. The slightly elevated mattress hasn’t worked. Our doctor prescribed infant gaviscon which has helped some. Otherwise she sleeps on us most of the time. Lots of sleep deprivation. If you figure it out, please let me know!

  • I am also going through the same thing, my baby gets a congested nose and sometimes a raspy voice. When he is out on his back he becomes upset. I have been given a medication to reduce the level of acidity in his stomach but first before giving that to him I’m going to see if eliminating dairy from my diet with help. I have a friend who did this and was able to keep breastfeeding so I am hoping to do the same. The medication wasn’t going to help the congested  in his nose that keeps him up at light. He gets very upset after a feed. Salome drops have helped and I use a nose aspirator to suck out the clear mucus. You can try that.
  • Pace feeding really helped us with our first born.  Essentially going incredibly slow when feeding - like it took 45 minutes for 1 bottle.  And also just being gentle with ourselves.  It’s hard enough being a parent of a new born let alone dealing with super tough tummy issues.
  • How did you guys find this out? Our baby gets stuffed and congested from time to time and spits up quite a bit but not sure if it's silent reflux. She sometimes arches her back during night feeds and refuses the bottle. Way going to try to cut out dairy for a couple of weeks
  • It’s heartbreaking to see our babies uncomfortable and not able to rest. It sounds like you’re doing everything you can — the hypoallergenic formula, probiotics, careful feeding. One thing that really helped us during a similar struggle was Bab'ŷs Magîç Têa. It’s a natural herbal remedy that helps with gas, colic, and reflux. I was skeptical at first, but we noticed a big difference in our baby’s comfort and sleep after using it consistently. Definitely worth looking into if you haven’t tried it yet. Sending love and strength — hang in there! 💕

  • Currently on a two-week dairy free diet while we try to figure out if it’s an allergy and the reflux has improved significantly.

As long as I pace his feeding, burp him, and keep him upright for 15-20 minutes after his feed, he seems to be ok. Still spitting up but no more projectile vomit, rashes and less fussiness.

Total dairy elimination has been tough but I have been able to continue breastfeeding. Downside is no more formula as the hypoallergenic ones I found are north of C$65 per small tin.
