1st Trimester

Progesterone and HCG levels

I got my hcg and progesterone levels tested at 4wks2d, and hcg was 397 and progesterone was 18.6. My OBGYN wanted to put me on 100mg Progesterone saying she wants to see it a little higher, closer to 20, and it was "slightly low". No previous pregnancies or miscarriages. No current spotting or bleeding at all. I'm confused because it seems to be in range with how far along I am according to the lab range (1st trimester 4.1-34.0) and google (12-20 ng/ml 5-6 wks.) I would rather not take progesterone if not needed due to effects on my mental health and sleep, but will absolutely do it if it’s needed for baby. I’m just confused.

I retested 4wks4days (48 hours later) progesterone is 18.7 and hcg is 1138. normal progression? Need advice on if these levels seem normal, and if progesterone would even be needed in yall's opinion. What were your levels? This is my very first time being pregnant and I am now having bad anxiety over this. :(

Re: Progesterone and HCG levels

  • texassunbaby  HCG should double every 48 hours.  So that seems in range.  For progesterone, I'm not entirely sure.  If your doctor says you should take some to get it up a bit, then you should probably follow their advice.  THings to think about... would taking the progesterone be worse on you mentally than the anxiety you're currently experiencing over *maybe* needing to take it.  Also, if you were to experience a loss, would you have severe anxiety/doubt about the fact that you did not take the progesterone?

  • I have honestly never had my progesterone levels tested in any of my pregnancies, so maybe this is something your provider does typically that others don’t. If you haven’t had fertility issues or losses (which you mentioned you have no history of), I would feel the same as you. My midwife doesn’t even test hcg levels without reason. I had an at home pregnancy test, was scheduled for US at 7 weeks, and had typical pregnancy labs at that appt. No hcg levels were drawn because I hadn’t had nay concerning symptoms and there was a clear intrauterine pregnancy with strong heartbeat. It definitely isn’t standard to have progesterone tested for low risk pregnancies and no concerning symptoms. Sorry that this gave you anxiety. From what I have read progesterone should only be offered if you have early pregnancy bleeding and previous history of miscarriage.
