Z pack / azithromycin in first trimester

Has anyone taken the antibiotic azithromycin early in the first trimester? I’ve been sick for nearly 4 weeks and miserable but I’m just so scared of taking it since I’m only 7 weeks

Re: Z pack / azithromycin in first trimester

  • I had walking pneumonia when I was about 6 weeks pregnant & took azithromycin. I’m a pharmacist too & know it’s a safe option in pregnancy and has little to no side-effects, especially at such a short duration. I noticed improvement in my symptoms within a day too, which I felt like was best for me & baby.

As long as it’s indicated, I would feel comfortable to take it. Just make sure it’s covering what infection you think you have (ex. It’s drug of choice for walking pneumonia in pregnancy but usually shouldn’t be used for something like Strep throat because it has increased resistance to Strep bacteria). Know this was a lot but hope it helps! Get better mama.

  • It's completely understandable to feel concerned about taking any medication during early pregnancy, especially when you're feeling unwell. Azithromycin is often prescribed for bacterial infections and has been studied in pregnant women. Many healthcare providers consider it safe when prescribed in appropriate situations, even in the first trimester. However, it's crucial to consult with your doctor or a healthcare professional who can evaluate your specific condition and provide tailored advice. They can help you weigh the benefits of treating your illness against any potential risks, ensuring you make an informed decision that prioritizes both your health and that of your baby. Don't hesitate to reach out for guidance; you're not alone in this!
