How to get out of a trip?

Hey beautiful mamas to be! I come to y’all for some advice on how to get out a trip now that I’m pregnant. My husband and I booked a family and friends trip before we knew we had conceived. The location still has active Zika cases and it’s still listed as cautionary when traveling there if pregnant. I spoke with my OB, who agrees it’s too much of a risk given the fact that I will be approaching 11/12 weeks by the time of the trip.

Here’s the thing- we will not have announced to our  families yet about our pregnancy out of an abundance of caution.

The real issue is, I was one of the most vocal people in planning the trip and me NOT going out of the blue will be very out of character. Also note I have good friends and coworkers that will also be going on the trip- and they will not know about the pregnancy either. My husband has agreed that he will still go to be a good host, since we invited them, but I will stay back.

My question to all of you ladies is, what the heck can I possibly say to get out of this trip??

All suggestions/advice are greatly appreciated.

Re: How to get out of a trip?

  • Aww, I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this! It sounds like such an exciting trip and a bummer to miss it but wow you are a great mom already doing the best thing for your health and your baby’s health 🥹🥹

These aren’t great ideas but could you blame it on your doctor and say you aren’t cleared to travel (but not which doctor and what reason why)? And if they ask, you don’t have more information yet to share as you’re still working through it? Or just wait until closer and say you don’t feel well enough to go?

That’s really tough, I don’t have a big trip, but I’ve been wondering about dealing with extended family holiday gatherings that are before we want to announce our news. I don’t feel the best and I can’t eat the food I’d normally eat (at gatherings that completely revolve around food - and because some foods just sound gross now and also because some aren’t recommended during pregnancy). So I’m not sure how to get through those without raising suspicion either 😬

  • I am also worried about the family holidays! I cannot believe how many things I’ve developed aversions to- this is so hard lol

I honestly might just “come down” with vertigo a day or two before the trip. I had it a few months ago and travel was a huge no no from the doctors- and my family is aware that I had it before so hopefully it won’t be too much of a weird thing when it just pops up…
  • I agree, this is my first time being pregnant and I’m surprised by how fast the icky feelings have started with food and just always. 😳

That makes sense. And it’s definitely still true that you have the no-go from the doctors!
