1st Trimester

Total food aversion?

I’m 9.5 weeks along and have an aversion to absolutely everything, even plain foods (I’m wondering when the mythical cravings are supposed to show up). I haven’t been able to enjoy any food or drink since 5 weeks and have lost weight even though I make myself eat several times a day and haven’t had any vomiting. Has anyone else had this experience, and how did you deal with it? Every day feels so difficult and it seems like this isn’t common, because the only advice I can find is to “stick with the foods I enjoy.”

Re: Total food aversion?

  • I'm finding this as well this pregnancy. Nothing sounds appetizing and I feel generally nauseous and unwell most of the day. In the past when pregnant, I just had to eat frequently to keep the nausea at bay and only had aversions to specific foods, so this feels so different this time around! Definitely hard to get through the days, because I can tell that not eating much is also affecting my tiredness and moods.

Not much advice, I'm afraid, other than that I've found that occasionally once I force myself to take a few bites of something (usually something basic like pasta or toast) I realize the food is not so bad, and having something in my stomach helps me feel a little better, at least temporarily. I've also found myself wanting ice cream or sorbet sometimes on the more difficult nausea days and that has actually soothed my stomach a bit, surprisingly, so I'm just letting myself have that sometimes.

I hope you'll find some relief for yours soon! I'm a bit behind you in terms of how far along I am so I can't say when this will end...

  • 8 weeks here and was diagnosed with HG (Hyperemesis gravidarum-A severe type of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.) I was unable to function, had to take leave from work or couldn’t even do daily tasks. I told my doctor I needed relief and was prescribed Promethazine an anti nausea/vomiting medication that from my experience “worked” much better than any over the counter medications. I also still struggle with food aversions so if the nausea is at bay I am able to stomach something with the medicine. At first it made me sleep but I soon familiarized myself with the side effects and take it before eating or if I knew strong smells were creeping in my way to avoid any severe nausea spells. 8/10 times I found extreme relief and would highly recommend it to anyone for morning/all day sickness after speaking with their physician. I can confidently say that I have had a huge amount of relief in my 1st trimester when nothing else worked. It is also pregnancy safe but of course talk to your doctor first to see if it is right for you. I hope you feel better soon, hang in there mama. Take it from someone who saw no end in sight.
  • Total food aversions over here too. Generally feeling sick. Worst around 9/10 weeks. Nothing is appealing at all. Finally found a few things like Yoghurt, grapes, dried mango, shortbread that have gone down ok now (week 12). I have been trying to snack regularly before I feel hungry sick. I think it's ever so slightly getting better for me, really hoping it will for you.
  • Hey I’m pregnant with my 3rd baby here. From experience with my other 2 pregnancies I tried everything to get rid of the nausea/sickness nothing worked for me I could only stomach sweets or an ice lolly. I the same as you lost alot of weight but I finally got some appetite back at around 14 weeks (still couldn’t stomach certain foods) but better than I was. As long as you try and stick with taking folic acid and drink lots you will be ok. Sending love x
  • ugh, that sounds rough! i totally get it, i had a similar thing where everything just felt so unappetizing for a while, but it did get better around 12 weeks for me, so hang in there!

I actually checked the 'Heal Baby Care App' for this and here's what it says:

"I'm sorry to hear you're feeling this way; food aversions can be really challenging during pregnancy. It's not uncommon for some women to experience strong aversions without cravings, especially in the first trimester. Staying hydrated and focusing on bland, easy-to-digest foods like crackers, rice, or bananas might help.

If your weight loss continues or you feel very unwell, it’s important to discuss this with a healthcare provider for tailored advice. Have you found any specific foods that you can tolerate, even if they’re not enjoyable?"
