Cord blood and placenta

Is anyone keeping cord blood and/or placenta? Is that really a thing?

I'll probably collect colostrum before hand, but the other ones seem either expensive or excessive to do... (but obviously not judging, if you have the means)

Re: Cord blood and placenta

  • There was a time when I was researching placenta capsules because I heard it can help alleviate post partem depression.
I have clinic depression and general anxiety disorder so I was terrified of PPD and thought I'd be willing to do anything to help minimize that.
I don't think it's something I will pursue any longer as my current combination of medication and therapy has me in a really good place.

I'd like to do delayed cord clamping if it's safe at the time.

  • Delayed cord clamping is standard at the hospital group I’ll deliver at (and it’s also my preference), I’d rather do that than bank the blood. I think there are ways to somehow do both but I don’t really have the curiosity or need to look into it? It does seem like an either/or thing to me and I’d rather have the baby get all the blood he’s supposed to have right away, rather than save it for some unlikely hypothetical later on (that we’d also have to pay for).

I didn’t even know keeping the placenta was a thing, I won’t do that either.

  • I'll be doing delayed cord clamping if possible and I won't bother taking my placenta.

They are doing a study at my hospital that I've signed up to, which is to test a small amount of cord blood for 200 genetic conditions. This is as well as the heel prick tests that they do at 5 days old to test for cycle cell and CF.
  • Yah, cord clamping definitely makes sense to me--it's for the baby! Lol
I didn't know it was an either or thing, so that answers that.
  • I’ve done placenta encapsulation and will definitely be doing it again, as I found my energy levels and recovery were dramatically improved when I did so last time.

Do you have any tips or resources for how to go about placenta encapsulation?
