Scan at 6 weeks vs 8

edited August 2024 in 1st Trimester
I am seeing so many people getting scans at 6 weeks instead of 8. My OB will not perform scans before 8 weeks, and I’m curious if there is a benefit to getting a scan at 6. I am almost 7 weeks and have my first appointment on 9/3. However, do I need to advocate for an earlier appointment?

  • 8 weeks is great.  Less room for "we can't see a heartbeat " or we just see a pole" making the lady wonder and stress if all is OK.  Your doc is fine.

  • I see it as a blessing to not need an earlier scan. That generally means you’re low risk & haven’t had losses. There’s really no reason to have an earlier scan unless you’re having concerning symptoms. With my most recent pregnancy my first scan wasn’t until I was almost 13 weeks.
  • There really is no true difference except for peace of mind.
I got a SUPER early positive so I will be going to a boutique "for fun" ultrasound location that does transvaginal ultrasounds so I can have them tell me placement and rule out ectopic. It's not medically necessary, but I know my mind and I'll feel better knowing little bean is situated in the right spot.

Anymore, most people don't get scans until 12 weeks or thereabouts, unless you're high risk / history of MC.  So, 7 weeks is plenty early.  They can't really do much besides a pee stick test before then anyway.

  • I had an transvaginal ultrasound at 5w5d because I has spotting. you could completely see the fetus and yolo sac. We did see cardiac activity with mine, but it is uncommon to see. So I don’t think it’s totally a waste to have it done. Gives you some peace of mind :)
