Pregnant after 35

Failed 1 hr glucose test

Hello! I'm 37, pregnant with my 3rd daughter. I've had uncomplicated pregnancies with all 3 of them thus far, so I was completely caught off guard by a failed 1 hour test this week. I eat clean, don't eat much sugar, lifelong vegetarian, am a healthy weight. Up 10 lbs at 28 weeks. My number was 154 and now I'm completely stressed out thinking about the 3 hour test to come. I have a history of fainting and debilitating fear of needles. Barely made it through the 1 hour blood draw without passing out. I needed something to eat and water immediately after the draw. I had a horrible sleep, anxiety and leg cramps last night that I attributed to that nasty liquid sugar and now the next test requires a larger serving of said sugary beverage. I know this test requires fasting for 12 hours and then 4 draws on an empty stomach without water. To say I'm concerned is an understatement. I'm genuinely more concerned about getting through this test than if I wind up being positive for GD.

I'd love tips, tricks, words of encouragement.. anything.

Re: Failed 1 hr glucose test

  • I failed the 1hr 2x times and had to take the 3hr. Both 3hrs, my 1hr draw was around the cutoff of the bg range. Hrs 2 & 3 were well under the limits of those hours. By the time I left I was crashing and had to drink some juice to hold me over till I could get food. I wouldn’t be too stressed. As for your fears and fainting- talking to someone w your head turned while they do whatever they do w your arm might help? It works for some people to get them distracted.

Hopefully you’ve had your test at this point and come out the way you were hoping! And if not, remember Gd is not a death sentence. It’s very easy to eat healthy and deliciously following the guidelines. A CGM makes things much easier than having to prick your finger multiple times a day. I’ve had a few friends that have gotten it w every pregnancy (2-3 kids each) and it went away pp.
