Nasal bone not visualized

Hello,

I just wanted to see if anyone has gone through the same. I had had my 20 week anatomy scan and MFM stated how nasal bone was absent. Also baby is measuring 6 days behind. To them that was alarming and concerning. NIPT came back all normal and so did the NT. I have no been referred to cardio peds because baby’s position didn’t allow them to visualize the heart properly. Amniocentesis is an option even though  I’m scared but I know it’ll give us peace of mind. Has anyone experienced the same where everything is fine but baby doesn’t have a nasal bone. Is it noticeable? Will they eventually get a bone or is this something that requires procedures?

Re: Nasal bone not visualized

  • My NT was elevated, NIPT results came back normal. I am still considered high risk. I just had an appointment with my genetic counselor where we actually had talked about this. While my little guy does have his nasal bone, we did discuss how the missing nasal bone can be a big indicator of other bigger problems. Unfortunately, there's a lot of syndromes that the NIPT doesn't test for. There are a couple more blood tests you can elect to do to rule out some other potential syndromes. The way my GC explained it is: in a series you have books 1-8. The NIPT only looks for books 1,3,5,7. Some books can have only a single sentence misspelled, or even just a single word. Hence, the NIPT doesn't test for them because they're not as common, or there's no genetic evidence of an issue. I hope everything goes well for you and this is just a bump in the journey.
