3rd Trimester

kick counting stress

I'm well into my third trimester and my baby never really got into a consistent routine as far as movements go. My doctor used to say that, as long as what I felt was "normal for me" everything was good, so I was not too stressed out, since "normal for me" was feeling her more some days than others and always going long stretches of time (hours) without feeling anything. I recently moved to a new city, so I saw my new doctor for the first time today, and she was more of the opinion that I really should be feeling her move throughout the day now, which I definitely don't. I told her that, and she said "give us a call if that happens", which was kind of frustrating, since I was right there telling her exactly that. It's my first baby so I don't really know what's normal. Is it really not common to go for hours without noticing a movement?

Re: kick counting stress

  • My doctor told me that for low risk pregnancies they usually don't bother making people actually track or count the kicks, but rather just get a feeling for when they're normally active and make sure you're feeling at least some movement throughout the day. If it's been a while since you've felt anything, then either drink cold water or eat/drink something lightly sugary and then lay on your left side and see if that helps prompt a response and some movement. She told me I should call if I don't feel at least 10 movements in an hour after that.

For me, I feel like my baby is most active mid morning, mid afternoon, and then late at night. I feel literally almost no movement between like 11am to like 2:30pm, and maybe 4:30pm to 7:30pm ish, and that seems "normal for me" so I'm usually not concerned.

I like your first doctor's advice better, track what feels normal for you, and if it feels like it's been a while, do something to trigger some movement. And then call the doctor if you're still not feeling any movement after that.

  • Don't be too worried, your baby has less room in there later on to move the same and they develop their own routine you should already know. Movements are normal baby is normal same as before. I think doctors sometimes overreact. But that's my opinion. God bless mama ! Take care.
