No Appointment Until 12 Weeks?

I called my doctors as I had a positive pregnancy test last week. They want to have a phone call with me at 8 weeks and then an ultrasound at 12 weeks. Is this normal?

  • yep pretty much unless you have reason to believe things aren’t going well or have predispositions for a high risk pregnancy

  • Yes with my most recent baby my first in person appt/ultrasound wasn’t until I was almost 13 weeks. Insurance will usually only pay for 1 first tri scan (unless more are medically necessary). With my son I was in a different state and my first appt/scan was during my 7th week. And I had to pay OOP for the 12 week scan which I wasn’t expecting.

Absolutely normal! There is absolutely nothing they can do for you before then.  At least going in at 12 weeks they can do a dating scan, go through history, do an exam and discuss what to expect.  Unless you have had complications in the past, there is no need to go in sooner.
