1st Trimester

Confusion on low HCGs and Ultrasound Results

My HCG scores have been very low, but continue to rise at a rate of 63-68% every two days.

17 DPO - 74

19 DPO - 122

21 DPO - 205

25 DPO - 539

I am very confused as I keep preparing for a pregnancy loss, but the numbers keep rising. I was tracking ovulation with LH stips, but possibly could be off as I had my first positive test fine line at 15 DPO. Had an early ultrasound at approximately 5 wks 2 days, and they found a 7 mm gestational sac but the doctor was concerned the edges were irregular and told us not to be optimistic about it being viable. However, I found a study online that irregular gestational sacs are not more likely to end in pregnancy loss that regular ones. I haven't had any spotting or bleeding.

Has anyone had a similar experience? We have another ultrasound scheduled for May 1st but it's so difficult waiting to see what happens!

Re: Confusion on low HCGs and Ultrasound Results

  • @bluechimney The most important thing about HCG early in PG is that it doubles every 48 hours.  Obviously yours is not, but it is close to doubling.  I have heard of a few people having slow rising HCG (like yours) that then caught up and was fine and the PG was successful.  However, I've also heard a few people with slow rising HCG (like yours) that rose and rose and seemed like it may be ok, but only ended up in a later MC because the baby never ended up developing the way that it should.  Unfortunately you're in a very difficult situation, and as hard as it is, the only thing you can do is to keep monitoring your HCG every 48 hours and wait until your May 1 appointment.  I'm sorry for this stressful and difficult situation.
