Babies: 6 - 9 Months

6 month old takes a nap every 2-3 hours during the day

My baby is going to be 6 months in a few days. He wakes up about 3 times during the night and take a lot of naps during the day. His naps only last 10-20 minutes. Is this normal? I just found out other baby’s are taking 3 naps during the day and should be transitioning to 2 naps. I am only breastfeeding him and slowly introducing him to fruits.

  • Every baby is so different. I don't think I have the best tools to help you. I feel like your baby would probably benefit from at least one longer nap with a full sleep cycle during the day, but that's just me and my limited experience and knowledge talking. I just know it's good for their mood and was told good naps during the day help to have a better sleep at night. If your baby gets cranky throughout the day, that can be a sign he needs a longer nap. If all is well, maybe that's just what works for him at the moment. If you are still concerned, you could consult with a pediatrician.

In my case, my 6mo+2weeks sleeps all night (about 12h) and does 2-3 short naps (about 30/40min) and 1 longer naps (about 1h/1h30). When she wakes up and I feel the nap was too short (10/15min for example) and she is calm, I wait a few minutes in case she settles back to sleep. It doesn't happen often, but if she cries soon after waking up, I don't hesitate and quickly pick her up.
She's been breastfed until I had surgery last month. Now I'm supplementing with formula. She also currently eats two meals a day with a variety of items (chicken, veggies, fruits, cheeze and cereals).

  • My baby was the exact same way at 6 months. His naps were short (about 30 min) and frequent. He was also starting solids by way of purées but his main nutrition was breastmilk. He woke up several times in the night to feed also. He is now 8 months + 1 week and his schedule is just now starting to change — longer and less frequent nap, less night wakings (he no longer nurses to feed but for comfort). All babies are different and I’ve come to learn that breastfed babies are in a league all their own.
