Any super athletic moms to be?

Hi everyone! I’m a 1st time mom to be and 41…. Will be delivering when I’m 42. Having spent the last 20 years of my life deep in fitness by way of running, cycling, yoga, tennis, snowboarding - I’m incredibly anxious about keeping up with my regular activities without harming baby. I hate to say it but I’m super sad I won’t be able to ride my road bike this year, at all, per recco due to potential fall risk, but I’m seeking some advice/support on how to manage this for the next 8ish months! (Currently just about 7weeks…)

So far I’ve been keeping up with getting a daily workout in, the intensity and distance of runs just look a bit different than they used to. Would love to hear anyone’s stories and experiences with previous pregnancies you may have had and how long you were able to keep up with the majority of your activity, or if you chose to cut it early on?

With my first I chose to cut running because I (foolishly) was worried I’d knock the baby loose or something silly like that. I still kept up with weights, walking 3 miles every day, and some other cardio. My doc had said I could continue anything that I would normally do. My sister was also always a runner and ran a 5K in her first trimester. She’s due to give birth next month
  • I ran throughout my last pregnancy (9 years ago)- ranging 4-8 miles each day.  I even ran a 1/2 marathon at 30 weeks!  Now it looked a LOT different than non-pregnant runnng. Much slower on days I didn’t feel great and as I got bigger, and so many bathroom breaks lol.  I never “pushed” - more like leisurely jogging.

I plan to do the same thing this pregnancy if all is well! Running, lots of hiking, yoga, and even skiing the rest of the season. I understand the fall risk, but I’m already a cautious skier and rarely put myself in “dangerous” situations (terrain I’m not familiar with, crowded slopes, etc).

  • I stopped running with each one. I wish I hadn't as it is so hard to get back into it. I stay active and modify workouts as I progress. Just an irrational fear of mine so I give in to it.

I think what you are doing is perfect. Listen to your body and modify as you go!
  • This is my second pregnancy,  I’m almost 36 and had my first one at 34. I worked out daily with my first, up until birth and I am doing the same with this one. I walk on incline, lift weights, squats, stair master etc. I’m not as strong as I used to be and that’s okay. I do less weight because my back hurts or my sciatica flares up but I enjoy staying active and it makes me feel better. Just listen to your body and change things as needed. But I know working out before and during pregnancy helped me recover quicker. Good luck 🫶🏼🫶🏼

I am currently 27 weeks and 4 days and I have been boxing with coach one on one twice a week. I also take a barre class twice a week. My back definitely hurts after boxing and I usually need to see my chiropractor the next day. But I used to worry about hurting the baby but I think I’ve put those fears on the back burner and reassured myself that staying healthy and active is best for me and the baby.
  • My first trimester I could barely leave the couch from fatigue and morning sickness. In my third now, but can’t imagine running  anymore.
Fast walked today which was almost as fast as my husband running. Not the same but trying.
I hear being too muscular/tight in pelvis causes more tearing. Anyone heard of this?

Hi. I guess your first priority should be the welfare of your baby. Focus on that one and then after, start planning on how gradually return to your usual activities. Good luck dear.
