Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Refusing bottle

My baby is 4 months and is refusing bottles. I only breastfeed but still introduced bottles at 4 weeks to help with long car rides. At 3 1/2 months she all of a sudden stopped taking the bottle.  I've tried lansinoh, phillips avent anti colic, phillips Avent natural, even flo balance wide neck, and Como tomo and she had only taken them on very rare occasions. The majority of the time she won't take a bottle. Any advice is helpful thank you!

Re: Refusing bottle

  • I’m currently going through this. My 3 month old has been refusing his bottle too. I found an old thread online. Someone shared a great insight about jaw muscle and sucking reflexes diminishing at this age. We’re seeing a lactation specialist tomorrow. I’m hoping for some answers.

Were you able to get your baby to continue using the bottle?

  • We’re at 5 months as of yesterday, baby girl knows how to take the bottle but pretty much refuses it. She’ll gnaw on the nipple when she’s frustrated and gets some milk that way, but she’s all boob.
  • have any of you tried to go up a flow level? My baby never outright refused a bottle but would gnaw on the nipple if it wasn’t fast enough. I only breastfed her a short time since she has an ineffective latch so she is only bottle fed. She has just turned 3 months but she’s been on a level 2 flow since about 6 weeks.
