Ugh MIL and Flannel Sheets

So every year MIL and FIL ask us for a list of stuff we would like for Christmas for them to get ideas from. ?Last year I found the wishpot website where you can add things from any website and then email it to people and they really liked using that for ideas for us. ?So this year I used that again. ?So DH and I really need new sheets for our bed since the ones we have are starting to get worn and we had said that when DS was mostly out of our bed then we would get new sheets. ?So he is now mostly in his own crib, or at least he was before Christmas, but that is another story for another time. ?So I put a set of flannel sheets from LL Bean on our wishpot account in a dusky blue color that would match the other bedding that we already have which is kinda dusky purple, green etc. ?

So Christmas comes. ?BIL and SIL and their family always stay at the ILs house on Christmas and we always stay at my parents house. ?We do Christmas morning with my parents then head in to my ILs house in the early afternoon for Christmas dinner and to open presents with them. ?Since BIL and SIL and our neices stay at the ILs they obviously do Christmas morning there with them first. ?

So after dinner we were opening our presents from the ILs and got to a really big bag that had no name on it, but MIL said it was for us. ?So we open it up and it is a set of flannel sheets! ?Except it is brick red with a snow man print all over it. ? Then MIL?proceeds?to tell me that she knows that was not the color we had asked for but BIL and SIL got to pick which bag they wanted between the 2 and they got the color that we had asked for, so I could ask SIL if she wanted to trade if I wanted to (but I could tell that they did not want to so why ask). ?Plus I think to myself, wait a minute, we were the ones that asked for the sheets not BIL and SIL so why did they get the ones that we wanted?? ?It makes no sense to me at all. ?I don't even see BIL and SIL using the sheets since they are very warm sleepers and barely even use blankets in the winter let alone flannel sheets. ?So I did not have the balls to ask them to trade or to ask MIL for the receipt to exchange them. ?So now what do I do. ?Do you think it would be rude for me to try to sell them and then buy the ones that we wanted instead? ?The kicker is that she left the price on these ones and she spent $120 (Martha Stewart collection from Macys) on them and the actual ones that we wanted from LLBean were only $80! ?Ugh. ?Should I just suck it up and use the ugly sheets? ?Am I just over reacting to all of this? ?It is just really annoying to me I guess. ?MIL drives me nuts sometimes.

Re: Ugh MIL and Flannel Sheets

  • I don't think exchanging or selling gifts is rude at all. When I give a gift, I want the recipient to enjoy what I got for them, and if that means exchanging, then so be it. I would try to return them to Macy's if you can and if not, sell them and get the ones you wanted.

  • I think that if you could get a good price for them and then get the ones you want, then sell them, if not, I think you might as well keep them and just make sure that nobody ever sees the sheets on your bed if you dislike them that much. Why even ask you what you want if they aren't going to get it for you? I can understand your frustration!

  • Do you think Macys will take them without a reciept? ?I really do not want to ask MIL for it and she probably would not be able to find it anyways......

  • take them back and get the ones you want-- she'll never know.
  • I'd take them back to Macy's and explain that you got them as a gift but have no receipt. They will probably give you store credit but at least you could try to find a better color/pattern there than the snowmen ones you ended up with.

I feel your pain. We, too, received unwanted flannel sheets for Christmas :(

  • Macy's puts a sticker on everything now so you can take it back without a receipt.  Does it have the exta sticker?  If so you will have no problem taking them back.  The only issue would be if she paid for them with credit or debit card.  If she did that you would get a store credit, if she paid cash they will give you the cash back.
  • If your MIL did get them at Macy's you do not need a receipt anymore to return or exchange items.  They have a special coding now that brings up the exact price that the customer paid for the item.  Also don't be surprised if the sheets weren't really that much, Macy's had a ton of Martha stuff on sale before Christmas.  DH & I have 3 or 4 sets of flannel sheets that my mom has given us, we typically get a new set every year for Christmas, I really don't think it matters if they match or really even if you don't like them, you are sleeping, not staring at the snowmen.  As long as the sheets keep you warm that's whats important.

  • I don't think it is wrong to try to get theones you wanted, but I do think you are over reating a bit to be so upset at MIL.

  • GreenEggs&Ham, I am not really upset, just annoyed I guess. ?Was it really that hard to put a tag on the bags so that we would get the sheets that we actually asked for? ?I guess that is what annoys me the most.
