Spit up or Vomitting?

I've tried talking to our pediatricians I even switched to a new one. But I feel like her "spitting up" isn't spitting up. I looked back from when she first was seen and gained 4lbs from Aug to Oct -- from Oct to Dec - she gained less than a pound but was still "gaining weight." The "spit up" doesn't look like is dribbling out the sides of her mouth. It sounds and sometimes pops over our shoulder onto the ground with a nice splat. Most of the time recently it's like turning on a faucet right after her feeding. During her feeds she turns her head side to side...and she cried after a swallow, and a few seconds later it was a little burp and then the next few seconds, the total fountain of her formula. Even after an hour - hour and a half, it's still a fountain of contents coming up over our shoulders. It's all day long. She drinks 4 oz. She used to poop daily, but the last few days it was 2 days in between (small poop, and today medium-sized), it used to be a bigger amount I feel like. But at this point, I don't even know everything is just running together. I just feel like it's not normal what she is doing but I rather keep asking. If it is normal then great but if it isn't normal and it gets worse and it's something serious, and no one listened? Yeah, won't be a very happy mother. So I just need some mother opinions.

Re: Spit up or Vomitting?

  • I’m lurking, but it doesn’t sound normal to be bringing up that much formula. To me, it either sounds like acid reflux or maybe something physical. My brother had pyloric stenosis as an infant and it took my mom getting a second opinion for them to diagnose it. He would vomit up sometimes a whole bottle at a time. He had a barium swallow test done and then needed surgery to repair it. Not saying that’s what it is since it’s not too common, but if you feel like something isn’t right, find a different doctor to run more tests.

  • That does seem like quite a lot to come back up especially over an hour later. Have you tried different types of formula? Maybe she has an allergy or needs the kind that is more gentle on the stomach. Gaining is good but there's also a curve, so you'd want it to gain at a certain rate. I would ask if another doctor at the practice can give a second opinion
