Why is My Baby Not Waving at 12 Months?

I'm a bit concerned because my baby hasn't started waving at 12 months, and I'm curious about the potential reasons behind this developmental milestone delay. Are there specific factors I should consider or milestones I should be aware of that could be influencing my baby's ability to wave? Additionally, what proactive steps can I take to encourage and support my baby in acquiring this skill? I want to ensure that I'm providing the necessary support for my child's development, so any insights into the possible reasons and guidance on fostering waving skills would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Why is My Baby Not Waving at 12 Months?

  • For my babies, I did a lot of learning through play. I would imitate their noises to help them with speech- when they hear me imitate them, they were more willing to play back and imitate my sounds. Same type of thing with movements. When we would play peek a boo I would not only put my hands in front of my face and remove them but I would move their hands over their eyes, remove them and say peek a boo as well. It helped them to know the motion and reinforce the idea of copying as learning through play. For waving I did something similar. I would sometimes pop up and wave, saying hi enthusiastically. One hand, multiple hands, etc as it made my child laugh. Then I’d also move their hand in a waving motion saying hi enthusiastically. You can play the hokie pokie game and have them move their bodies, first showing them with you moving and then moving their hands and feet as well. I’ve found that learning through play is the easiest and most bond creating way I’ve tried. It almost always ends positively, strengthens our relationship because we’re spending one on one time together and is just fun! I hope this helps!
