2nd Trimester

Sleeping on my back 2 trimester

Hi! I use to be a back sleeper but stop for a few years and right before I got pregnant I went back to sleeping on my back. Now that I’m pregnant and in my second trimester, I’m reading that back sleeping is dangerous and I’m concerned now that I may have hurt my baby. Did or does anyone else sleep on their back while pregnant? Did it cause problems for the baby?

Re: Sleeping on my back 2 trimester

  • Sleep as you are comfortable.  I was a back sleeper all through pregnancy and kiddo is fine. The theory is that baby will put pressure on an artery in which can cause your blood pressure and affect blood flow to baby.  Your body will wake you or you will move if there is a severe issue.
  • My midwife says it doesn’t affect everyone, and that when it does you know it, so yes you can sleep on your back if it doesn’t affect you. Personally I haven’t been able to sleep on my back for the last few weeks because it wakes me up in a manner or 30 sec or so and I start feeling dizzy and really uncomfortable. There is not way I could stay like that, the sensation is very strong.

  • I’m also a back sleeper (first and second pregnancy). At some point, the weight becomes uncomfortable. My OB in my first pregnancy recommended that I sleep with a pillow under one side of your back, so that you’re tilted; it’s more like semi back sleeping. In my first pregnancy, that made back sleeping comfortable for me for a bit longer, until it became uncomfortable in my third trimester. At that point, I got a body pillow. This time, I started using my body pillow at the beginning of the second trimester, so that I can get used to it before the third trimester. I put the u shaped pillow between my knees and lean my back against it to angle myself, at about a 45 degree angle. The pillow between the legs prevents hip and lower back pain and the pillow at the back is also to prevent back pain. Later, once the belly is heavier, I’ll put another pillow under the side of the belly for support. My first baby is 9 years old now and has never had any health issues. No issues with second baby at week 19 so far. Just make sure you’re comfortable and have peace of mind, so that you can get your best sleep. Best of luck!
