First IVF timing advice

Hi all-
I am planning for my first IVF cycle soon and have a question on timing. If everything goes according to plan, a week after the retrieval I have to go on a week-long work trip. I'm worried this timing is too tight
1 )in case things have to get pushed back and my retrieval is later than expected
2) in case I will still be in pain and uncomfortable a week after the procedure and
3) in case I have gained weight during the stimulation meds and I feel not so confident and bloated while seeing work colleagues. I realize this is vain but I'm on IUI 2 now and I have gained weight from the meds and am feeling so blah. I assume IVF is worse!

I can't tell if I am over-worrying. I'd rather not waste a month by pushing it back but I also want to relax and cultivate good vibes afterwards - not go on a stressful trip! Would you go for it or push it back a month?

Thanks!

  • Hi @Knottie74c0336ebbdf7a7e,
Just a few things to consider, are you going to do a fresh or frozen transfer? It sounds like you may be doing frozen if you are planning on going on a trip a week after the retrieval. If doing fresh, that may interfere with your trip.
    1) I would be surprised if your retrieval ends up being an entire week late… while of course no one can predict with absolute certainty, I would say usually the cycles vary by a few days rather than a week.
    2) I can only speak from personal experience but after my retrieval I was tired and a little sore but able to resume “normal” activity within a few days. I would say overall I experienced more emotional exhaustion than physical pain.
    3) I hate to sound like this, but just get over the fear of weight gain. It could be a part of the process and I don’t know you but knowing what you are going through, would assume that you would much rather gain a few pounds and get that long awaited BFP than worry about how tight your pants are. I am 7 months postpartum and still nothing fits, the days I feel down on myself I look back to my fertility journey and say, if I told myself a year ago I could have a beautiful baby but have to gain 20lbs in the process, I know I would jump at the chance.
Overall, perhaps going on the trip could help get your mind off things while playing the waiting game. It will be up to you, do you think you will look back at this time and regret not having gotten ahead a month of treatment? Or if you truly feel waiting is better then push it back. You posted here seeking answers, but only you will truly know what is best for you 🙂I hope I didn’t babble on too much and that this helps even if just a little. I have been there and know how all consuming it can be.

  • Considering potential uncertainties in IVF timing, it might be prudent to reschedule the work trip a bit later to ensure flexibility around the retrieval date. This allows for post-retrieval recovery, minimizing discomfort and addressing any weight-related concerns. Prioritizing your well-being and minimizing stress during this crucial time is key.

I agree with @ivfmeerut . You should by all means minimize stress during this moment. I'm not saying that it's risky, however, it's good to lessen uncertainties on your part. Sending hugs here.
