The Baby Name Thread

Re: The Baby Name Thread

  • Finally had a semi productive name convo with DH this weekend. I think he’s conceded it doesn’t have to be an L name.
His current fave is Asa. Another name on my list was Finn so he proposed Asa Finn. Honestly I’ve had the name Asa on my list since naming DD back in 2017, but I’m not sure I LOVE it personally. He also did flag Lochlan as a potential name and is neutral about Logan. At least it gives me something to toss around in my head and start pairing with middle names finally. He also wants first name two syllables and middle one syllable. Which I think we can reasonably do. I kinda like Lochlan Jack. He also liked Landis which is meh for me but marked Declan and Soren neutral which I can work with.

What made me laugh is that a lot of the names he didn’t like were popular millennial boy names. Like Eli and Ben, Isaac, Evan, Dominic. He’s like “I knew at least five guys with these names in college.” Lmao. Ok fair. It would kind of be like naming a girl Jessica or Ashley for me.
  • @HGRich That's got to feel better, having a few more options to mull over! I think we are planning on narrowing down to just a handful (like, 2 or 3) of options and then deciding formally once baby arrives. That might be a helpful option if there are names you are okay with but not enthusiastic about. They might feel like better fits once you meet him.

  • @kamikazezoomy that’s kind the plan this time I think. To narrow it down to a few. It feels weird to be so second-guessy this time since we knew our first two kids’ names a couple months before they were due and felt settled. I feel a lot of pressure this time to give him a good name because I love my other kids names so much. 🙈
  • H and I had the Talk finally - he likes Hannah, Samantha, Natalie, and I like Vivian/Vivienne, Victoria. Alice and Noelle are also super pretty but I have acquaintances/colleagues with those names.

We both liked Olivia, Charlotte, Claire, Amelia, but agreed that those are too popular rightnow.

Based on these lists, are there any other girl names you think we'd like, preferably outside top 50? Any names ending in an -et or -ette sound are a no go (even though Juliette is so pretty!)
  • Chloe, Camille, Erica?
  • @denise_amd with my first I worried about popularity a lot. My fav boy name for about 10 years at the time was in the top 5 for years. H said if we like it to not worry about how popular it is. I don’t regret it one bit! I know for girls names can be a bit more personal for them. But I honestly didn’t look at the top names until just now. H likes common names so of course our current girl name is in the top 50 again lol. I’m just saying if there’s a name you truly love I wouldn’t worry too much about popularity. 🥰 I’ll share our name list that we didn’t go with but even some of those are in top 50.
  • So, I thought I had settled on at least a first name for baby girl, and H says he likes it too, but I still am kind of thinking of having a couple options to see what fits best once we meet her. Before we knew she was a girl, I was really liking Arlo for a boy. Does changing it to Arlowe work as a girl option, do you think, or should I just skip it?
  • @kamikazezoomy IMO I don’t love it as much on a girl. Probably because I haven’t heard it for a girl. What about Marlowe or Harlow? But if you like Arlowe then go for it!
  • As of right now I think we’re going with Emily Elizabeth. H brought Emily to the table and I initially said no way but then it grew on me over the course of a month or so. I love that I can call her Emmy. I call my son a NN that ends in Y. We probably won’t announce her name or anything just in case we change it. That happened with my son’s middle name in hospital and it was awkward telling everyone we changed it! I don’t usually order anything personalized so not worried about that. We’ll see!
  • I think we're pretty 100% on the full name. Went straight from hating everything to finding out it was a girl and feeling totally locked in to this one.
  • @HGRich Ooh Camille is cute! We have a close friend with a 1 year old Chloe.

@virtaur True, the popularity shouldn't matter much! We still have time to mull it over, and worst case scenario we wait till baby is born and have her input lol. Emily and Elizabeth are both beautiful names!
  • @kamikazezoomy How about Margot? It has a similar sound to Arlo

@stress_engine Congratulations!! It must feel good to have a big decision made
  • If we had another girl we were excited about “Amalia” instead of Amelia! Turns out we’re having 3 boys which had been so hard to think of 3 names!
  • We are down to a top 5 for boys names and I have no idea how we will decide!
    arlo
    jannes
    benno
    silas
    ian/iain

my partner is German and so jannes and Benno are the German names on the list. Ian is a family name on my side. And arlo and Silas are just nice :)

I think benno is cute but might be a bit too weird for people? Like they may think we are trying to make up some weird variation of Ben? (Although the kiddo would likely just go by Ben).

Also the meaning of the name kinda matters to me and I don’t love the meaning of arlo (between two hills…?) and Jannes is a bit more religious than I’d like.

    sigh!!

  • @louloumama that’s a great list! Is Jannes pronounced with a y sound at the beginning? And I think Benno is adorable. It’s unique but I don’t think it’s “weird.”
I didn’t look at the meaning of Arlo when it was on my list, but I can see how that makes you scratch your head lol I was piecing together sounds of other names (my husband was named by squishing together his dad’s first initial and middle name, so I tried that phonetically with my dad’s name)

I like all your choices, I don’t think you can go wrong :)

@louloumama I can relate to the frustration! We are down to a few names and can’t agree. Lol.

Will your LO have a German last name? That miiight make people realize it’s not a “weird” version of an American name but a German one. I actually really like Benno. I had Ian on my list too, but DH vetoed. Silas is becoming more common and I like it.

We are going back and forth between a few names but one we are really leaning towards is Asa. I brought it up to my old BMB and several had never heard it before and weren’t sure how to pronounce it. Any thoughts? I would have thought it would be clear it was pronounced like Ava, just with an S. It’s a boy name usually, and the Asas I’ve known were boys, but apparently sometimes unisex. Which I’m also fine with.
  • @louloumama do you have a 6 sided die? Could make a game out of it where you assign each name to a number, maybe 1 means to reroll. I've tried this, and the result of the die roll doesn't matter as much as my feelings in the moment before I look at it - usually I'm hoping it's one particular outcome. Maybe that could help?

@HGRich I read it is as "AH-sa", like the Japanese word for "morning". But English wasn't my first language so I always struggle pronouncing words lol

@HGRich I like it and I’ve heard of it before on boys!
  • My husband and I are just planning a pregnancy, so I haven't specifically considered names for children yet. But it was very interesting to read the cool ideas, maybe I will use something for my child.
