Infertility

Failed IUI

Hello.  My husband (40s) and I (36) restarted our fertility journey last year (after a break due to covid).  For background I have PCOS but husband's fertility is fine.

This year we have had three cycles of failed IUI.  We are going to be having a "next steps" consult this coming week to discuss ivf.  But honestly I've been looking at the costs and I'm not sure if we should move forward or give up at this point. Maybe Im just discouraged because i was really hopeful IUI would work and i wouldnt have to make this decision.

I know it's a highly personal question and ooneonly we can answer for ourselves but how does anyone make a decision to spend that kind of money on something that may not even work?

Part of me is wondering if my hesitancy is partially due to not understanding the whole process and the odds.  The research I've done says we have about a 40% chance but when I'm doing research in IVF I feel like it is such a foreign world that I don't even know what I don't know.  I don't know what questions to even ask to help make this decision.  What kinds of questions would you ask your doctor at this point?

Re: Failed IUI

  • When considering IVF after failed IUI cycles, it's natural to have doubts. Ask your doctor about success rates tailored to your specific situation, potential risks, and alternatives. Inquire about the clinic's experience, costs, and any financial assistance options. Discuss emotional support and consider seeking a second opinion for added clarity.

  • Success Rates, Personalized Assessment, Treatment Plan, Cost Breakdown, Emotional Support, Medication and side effects, Frozen Embryo options etc.
  • I would ask if they tailor treatment cycles, or put everyone on the same treatment plans at first. Ask about ICSI, success rates, if they recommend fresh or frozen transfers, testing options.
It is overwhelming and very scary. I did three IUIs and one IVF cycle, and currently have a seven month old baby girl. Looking back I sometimes had wished I jumped into IVF because IUI had such low success rates, but the truth is IVF is so much more that I was glad in some ways to have done IUI first.
It is a journey that you have to be fully committed to. Hopefully you can get answers from your doctor that will help you decide either way. It does seem like a huge gamble for something that is not promised. But it is worth it. Good luck <3
