3rd Trimester

Extremely swollen limbs. 36 weeks. Help.

My feet, ankles, calves…plus fingers, hands and wrists are all so swollen. I can barely walk and I have no feeling in fingers (carpal tunnel). I’m 36 weeks and this has been the last 4-5 weeks. I’m dreading another potentially 4-5…
My OB says it’s all normal, which I understand but I’m desperate for relief.
I drink lots of water, brace my wrists, compression socks and elevate, etc. I’m doing all the “try this” suggestions.

Looking for anything that others found may have helped.

  • I’m glad your OB is aware and so sorry you’re experiencing this. Have they checked your sodium levels or electrolyte levels by any chance? I had some swelling issues around 25 weeks and turns out I was low in sodium. Being low can cause your body to try and hold onto extra fluids. I’ve been taking the Needed brand electrolyte powder, adding Celtic salt to my filtered water, and recently found Coco 5 electrolyte drinks at our grocery store to supplement, and my numbers have been improving (and little to no swelling issues). I have also read that if you’re not getting enough protein that it can exacerbate swelling issues. You could try sipping some bone broth or adding collagen powder to drinks/foods if it’s possible you’re not getting enough protein.

  • I had the same experience and the biggest thing that helped me was adding a 30 min walk to my day and doing carpal tunnel wrist stretches regularly. But there's no fixing it (other than delivering the baby), it was just a rough time.
