Measuring Small

I am 7w4d today (according to my LMP) and I haven’t gone for my first official sonogram yet at my doctor’s office - that will be end of next week. I did go to a private sonographer yesterday though since I was feeling nervous and haven’t seen the baby yet. I just wanted to make sure something was in there. She said the baby was measuring small and wasn’t sure the date was right and we could barely see it. The photos are pretty unclear and just look like a blob and she said she only saw a flicker of a heartbeat but it was hard to tell. The private sonographer told me to come back in two weeks when it’s grown a bit, but the whole experience sent my anxieties through the roof. I’m wondering if I’m measuring small because it stopped growing and I may have a miscarriage coming up? Is that a possibility?

I have the most mild of symptoms, if any - aside some mild cramping but I’ve had that for at least 3 weeks now consistently, it hasn’t been anything worrisome, and just large and sore boobs. And napping quite often. No nausea though, limited food aversions. Just some frequent peeing and night insomnia but I feel like that’s because I’m so nervous about this baby.

Help for a nervous mama!

Re: Measuring Small

  • It is possible that your baby stopped growing and you have a missed miscarriage. But it is also possible that you ovulated late in your cycle and you just aren't as far along as you thought you were. At 6 and 7 weeks it can be pretty hard to see anything on an ultrasound of your belly (as opposed to transvaginal) so if the private sonographer was only doing an ultrasound of your belly it might just be hard to see and you might be measuring on track. Waiting is so hard, but unfortunately you just have to wait until your baby is a little bit bigger. Fingers crossed for you.

  • Totally understandable that you are nervous. 7 weeks is very early and it is totally possible that because it is early it would be hard to find baby.

A few things, when do you ovulate? I ovulate late. I know this. So my LMP is not a great indicator of exact dating. With my first I was due Sept 21, they moved it to Sept 27 at my 20 weeks scan because baby was measuring smaller (healthy but smaller). And then she was born October 6 - with basically zero signs of being overdue. Hah. So, 16ish dates past what my LMP date was. Baby was and is healthy - started grade 2 this year!

With this baby at my 9w4day scan they noted baby was more 8w3day. No one is worried, everything is healthy.

I understand it is nerve wracking. And having concerns is valid. But remember that not everything is cut and dry with dating. You got this mama!
