Morning Sickness

What is the best things to eat/take to help with morning sickness. I have to sleep most of the day because I feel so nauseous!! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: Morning Sickness

  • @heuchelin2020 Taking B complex in the morning has really helped curb my symptoms. Diclegis can be prescribed by your doctor to treat nausea and vomiting for morning sickness. This medicine is a combination of Unisom and vitamin B6, so if you speak to your doc about it, they may be ok with you just buying the 2 over the counter to take as you need. Unisom is also safe to take if you're having any insomnia as well. I've found having a full stomach/not letting myself feel hungry helps to prevent the nausea. The second my stomach is empty and I don't have food at the ready, bam! I get nauseous. Some find cold fruit, mints or lemons can help. I hope this helps, you got this mama! Sending you love and light <3

  • Sorry that the morning sickness has been rough! Mine usually starts in the late afternoon (though sometimes earlier if I haven't been good about snacking...), but is never bad enough that I feel medication is necessary. Mostly, I just don't feel like I can stomach food, which starts me down a spiral of feeling more nauseous because I have not eaten. Fruit juice has been my friend (and really the only thing I've craved). I'm in week 9 and definitely looking forward to the second trimester!!
  • Smelling rubbing alcohol can help. In my first pregnancy if it was just nausea I would carry around a lemon to scratch and sniff. I ended up needing diclegis eventually.
  • I second the small snacks, Unisom with dixylomine +b6, and smelling rubbing alcohol. I eventually got zofran last pregnancy and I wish I would have asked for it sooner. Sea bands never worked for me. Eventually the ginger candies would trigger a gag reaction for me last time!

I started adding those mio type things to my water with added vitamin B - this really helped me stay hydrated but curb some nausea since I had all day sickness. Also, always had a snack before bed (nuts or something bland) so I didn’t wake up already sick. Hope this helps!
  • Constantly eating cereals, mint gum, ice cold water or smoothies or popsicles, watermelon or oranges, mashed potatoes are a few things that have help me in the past.

  • My OB recommended 25 mg of Vitamin B6 3x per day, and unisom tablets at night. It’s been a game changer!
  • I have a question about changes in nausea. I'm in week 12 and not sure what I'm experiencing is morning sickness. Up until week 9 or so, I'd have what felt like "belly" nausea, an ill feeling stemming from an unsettled tummy. But that's pretty much gone away and I now experience what I'm calling "head" nausea. It's more like a motion sickness (which I do get). Has anyone else noticed a shift? This is definitely better than morning sickness, but I'm worried it's here to stay as my blood pressure drops...
  • I haven't experienced that, but it sounds unpleasant. After my first trimester last time (I'm still in my mid 9 week right now) I had a different kind of nausea, but it felt like it was more in my throat like I was stuffed full of food and ready to throw up, even if I wasn't. But if it is like motion sickness, maybe seabands would work for you? They work great for some pregnant people and not for others, but it might be worth a try. It really sucks to continue to sick when you're headed into the "promised land" of the second trimester.
  • Ooh, I get the throat one, too! Sparkling water has helped a lot with that (though, I seem to be embarrassingly burpy now, haha). I'll ask my OB at my next appointments if the motion sick nausea is still happening. Though now that you mention seabands, candied ginger also seems to help, which I've used for seasickness before. hmmm. So close to the promised land! Fingers crossed everything improves in a week and a half.
  • I think I might be feeling similarly to you. I would describe my nausea as how I feel when I read too long in a hot car. Definitely not the typical stomach churning nausea.

  • My nausea seems to be subsiding but moving to my throat as well. I thought it could be acid reflux. Which I am not sure how to help myself with that. Gum has helped some to distract myself from the taste and the feeling that there’s something in my throat.
I’m hoping this is also just a first trimester symptom…
  • Fresh ginger tea and sparkling water are the two things I've found work best. :)
